==Meaning== {{wikt}} Bacter is a Neo-Latin (i.e. Modern Latin) term coined from bacterium, which in turn derives from the Greek ''βακτήριον'', meaning small staff (diminutive of βακτηρία). Consequently, it formally means "rod".
