'''''Coprothermobacter''''' is a genus of rod-shaped microorganisms, belonging to the bacterial family ''Coprothermobacteraceae'' of the phylum ''Coprothermobacterota''.<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Pavan|first=María Elisa|last2=Pavan|first2=Esteban E.|last3=Glaeser|first3=Stefanie P.|last4=Etchebehere|first4=Claudia|last5=Kämpfer|first5=Peter|last6=Pettinari|first6=María Julia|last7=López|first7=Nancy I.|date=2018|title=Proposal for a new classification of a deep branching bacterial phylogenetic lineage: transfer of Coprothermobacter proteolyticus and Coprothermobacter platensis to Coprothermobacteraceae fam. nov., within Coprothermobacterales ord. nov., Coprothermobacteria classis nov. and Coprothermobacterota phyl. nov. and emended description of the family Thermodesulfobiaceae|journal=International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology|volume=68|issue=5|pages=1627–1632|doi=10.1099/ijsem.0.002720|pmid=29595416|doi-access=free|hdl=11336/93872|hdl-access=free}}</ref> This taxonomic genus has been reclassified in 2018, after different phylogenetic studies showed that these bacteria represented a deeply branched taxon of the domain ''Bacteria'';<ref>{{Citation|last=Pavan|first=María E.|title=Coprothermobacter|date=2019-06-27|work=Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria|pages=1–11|publisher=John Wiley & Sons, Ltd|language=en|doi=10.1002/9781118960608.gbm00752.pub2|isbn=9781118960608|last2=Pavan|first2=Esteban E.|last3=Kämpfer|first3=Peter|last4=Pettinari|first4=M. According to the first description of this genus, the etymology of its name derives from Greek words "''kopros''", meaning dung, from the source where one of the species (''Coprothermobacter proteolyticus'') was isolated,<ref name="Rainey 1993">{{Cite journal|last=Rainey|first=Fred A.|last2=Stackebrandt|first2=Erko|date=1993|title=Transfer of the Type Species of the Genus Thermobacteroides to the Genus Thermoanaerobacter as Thermoanaerobacter acetoethylicus(Ben-Bassat and Zeikus 1981) comb. nov., Description of Coprothermobacter gen. nov., and Reclassification of Thermobacteroides proteolyticus as Coprothermobacter proteolyticus(Ollivier et al. 1985) comb. nov.|journal=International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology|volume=43|issue=4|pages=857–859|doi=10.1099/00207713-43-4-857|doi-access=free}}</ref> and "''thermos''", meaning hot, warm, because of the relatively high temperatures at which these bacteria are able to grow, which can be as high as 75°C.<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Ollivier|first=Bernard M.|last2=Mah|first2=Robert A.|last3=Ferguson|first3=Thomas J.|last4=Boone|first4=David R.|last5=Garcia|first5=J. Actually, very few known bacterial species are included in this genus, which are characterized by sharing genetic information with microorganisms belonging to ''Archaea'', a taxonomic domain separate from the domain ''Bacteria''. For this reason, ''Coprothermobacteria'' are considered a diverging lineage of bacteria.
Among the species included in this genus, ''Coprothermobacter platensis''<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Etchebehere|first=C.|last2=Pavan|first2=M.
