It can also be known as '''genderless''', '''gender-free''', '''non-gendered''', or '''ungendered'''.

Agender represents a variety of identities that differ from conventional gender norms. Identities that fall under the agender label include demiagender and libragender, among others. The A in LGBTQIA+ stands for agender, alongside asexual and aromantic.<ref>{{Cite news |date=2015-02-11 |title=A is for Asexual, Agender, Aromantic |url=https://www.glaad.org/blog/asexual-agender-aromantic |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230326211810/https://www.glaad.org/blog/asexual-agender-aromantic |archive-date=2023-03-26 |access-date=2025-10-20 |work=GLAAD |language=en}}</ref>

The identity of agender people, like other queer identities, are not universally accepted, and agender people can face discrimination. The first person to be legally recognised as agender was recognised in Oregon in 2017.

In 2017 an analysis of gender identity surveys found that 14% of transgender participants identified as agender.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Morrison |first1=Tessalyn |last2=Dinno |first2=Alexis |last3=Salmon |first3=Taurica |date=2021-12-01 |title=The Erasure of Intersex, Transgender, Nonbinary, and Agender Experiences Through Misuse of Sex and Gender in Health Research |url=https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/190/12/2712/6354680?login=false |journal=American Journal of Epidemiology |volume=190 |issue=12 |pages=2712–2717 |doi=10.1093/aje/kwab221 |issn=0002-9262 |pmid=34409983 |url-access=subscription |archive-date=20 March 2023 |access-date=21 March 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230320133201/https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/190/12/2712/6354680?login=false |url-status=live }}</ref> In 2025, Gender Census, a global survey of non-binary people, found that 25% of participants identified as agender.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Gender Census 2025: Worldwide Report – Gender Census |url=https://www.gendercensus.com/results/2025-worldwide/ |access-date=2025-10-21 |language=en-GB |archive-date=28 October 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20251028081711/https://www.gendercensus.com/results/2025-worldwide/ |url-status=live }}</ref>

== History == According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded use of the word was in 1996, as "A-gender", in an article in the ''Independent''.<ref name=":4" />

A 1997 paper in ''International Journal of Transgenderism'' (later renamed ''International Journal of Transgender Health'') states that "An individual of any genetic sex may also regard [themself] as [...] an ungendered person, who does not or will not identify with any conventional gender".<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Eyler |first1=A.E. |last2=Wright |first2=K. |date=1997 |title=Gender Identification and Sexual Orientation Among Genetic Females with Gender-Blended Self-Perception in Childhood and Adolescence |journal=International Journal of Transgenderism }}</ref>

=== Neutrois === '''Neutrois''' is a gender identity closely related to agender, in which someone has a neutral gender. The term was coined by H.A. Burnham in 1995, and was most popular in the 2010s.<ref name=":7">{{Cite web |title=NEUTROIS Definition & Meaning {{!}} Dictionary.com |url=https://www.dictionary.com/browse/neutrois |access-date=2026-05-29 |website=www.dictionary.com}}</ref><ref name=":8">{{Cite web |date=2021-08-25 |title=Here’s What It Means to Be Neutrois |url=https://www.cosmopolitan.com/relationships/a37388362/neutrois/ |access-date=2026-05-29 |website=Cosmopolitan |language=en-US}}</ref> Neutrois and agender overlap in meaning, with some people identifying as both, but neutrois is associated closer with expression and physical appearance.

The term is often (although not always) used by those who experience gender dysphoria and/or gender euphoria who may seek medical and/or social gender transitions to have a more neutral or androgynous appearance.<ref name=":8" /> Neutrois is believed to come from the French "neutre", meaning neutral, and "trois" meaning three.<ref name=":7" /> Neutrois was one of 50 genders added as options on Facebook in 2014.<ref name="Telegraph2014" /> {{Multiple image | image1 = Neutrois Flag.svg | caption1 = Neutrois flag | image2 = Neutrois symbol.png | alt2 = A circle with a line coming out of the top. | align = center | caption2 = Neutrois symbol | width2 = 125 | alt1 = A flag consisting of three equal-spaced horizontal stripes, from top to bottom: white, green, black. }} ==Notable agender people== thumb|SJ Miller, an agender American academic. thumb|Marissa Lenti, an agender American voice actress.|244x244px * * Andre J., genderless American party promoter<ref>{{Cite web |title=Andre J. : On Real Beauty {{!}} The Beauty Bean |url=http://thebeautybean.com/site/real-beauty/andre-j-on-real-beauty/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110218202334/http://thebeautybean.com/site/real-beauty/andre-j-on-real-beauty/ |archive-date=2011-02-18 |access-date=2026-05-31 |website=thebeautybean.com |language=en-US}}</ref> * Angel Haze, American rapper and singer<ref name="auto">{{cite web |last=Keating |first=Shannon |date=March 27, 2015 |title=The Evolution Of Angel Haze |url=https://www.buzzfeed.com/shannonkeating/the-evolution-of-angel-haze#.bcWn4ONAX |access-date=April 18, 2016 |website=BuzzFeed |archive-date=22 October 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171022140701/https://www.buzzfeed.com/shannonkeating/the-evolution-of-angel-haze#.bcWn4ONAX |url-status=live }}</ref> * Bogi Takács, Hungarian writer<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.instagram.com/bogiperson/ |title=Bogi Takács |website=Instagram |access-date=November 8, 2025}}</ref> * Buhr, Brazilian singer<ref>{{Cite web |title=Só Buhr – Trabalho Sujo |url=https://trabalhosujo.com.br/so-buhr/ |access-date=2026-03-18 |website=trabalhosujo.com.br |archive-date=18 October 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20251018210305/https://trabalhosujo.com.br/so-buhr/ |url-status=live }}</ref> * Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, American theoretical cosmologist and particle physicist<ref name=":32">{{Cite news |last=Pitney |first=Nico |date=2015-06-24 |title=Meet The 63rd Black Woman In American History With A Physics Ph.D. |url=http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/chanda-prescod-weinstein_n_7574020 |access-date=2018-02-06 |work=HuffPost UK |language=en-GB |archive-date=13 November 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181113234025/https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/chanda-prescod-weinstein_n_7574020 |url-status=live }}</ref> * Cody Daigle-Orians, American author<ref name="About">{{cite web |title=About |url=https://acedadadvice.com/bio-miller |access-date=July 9, 2024 |website=Ace Dad Advice |quote="They are queer, ace, and agender."}}</ref> * DeAnne Smith, Canadian and American comedy writer<ref>{{Citation |title=DeAnne Smith -
