'''''Xenodevriesia strelitziicola''''' is a pathogenic ascomycete fungus in the class Dothideomycetes<ref>{{NCBI taxid|706560|''Xenodevriesia strelitziicola''|accessdate=8 September 2022}}</ref> that infects the South African plant ''Strelitzia''.<ref name="Capnodiales">{{cite journal|url=https://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/wfbi/sim/2009/00000064/00000001/art00005#|doi=10.3114/sim.2009.64.02|title=Phylogenetic lineages in the Capnodiales|journal=Studies in Mycology|date=1 June 2009|pages=17–47|publisher=Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute|vauthors=Crous PW, Schoch CL, Hyde KD, Wood AR, Gueidan C, de Hoog GS, Groenewald JZ|volume=64|issue=1|pmid=20169022 |pmc=2816965 }}</ref> It is the only species of the monotypic genus '''''Xenodevriesia''''' and family '''Xenodevriesiaceae'''.<ref name="OutlineFungi">{{cite journal|journal=Mycosphere|date=18 March 2020|title=Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa|doi=10.5943/mycosphere/11/1/8|vauthors=Wijayawardene NN, etal.|volume=11|issue=1|pages=1060–1456|s2cid=218933904 |issn=2077-7019|doi-access=free|hdl=10481/61998|hdl-access=free}}</ref>

==Morphology and reproduction== ''Xenodevriesia'' mycelium consists of medium brown, smooth, septate, branched hyphae. The conidiophores are dimorphic: there are microconidiophores and macroconidiophores.<ref name="NewFungi2"/><ref name="Capnodiales"/>

:The microconidiophores are reduced to conidiogenous cells (i.e. capable of generating conidia) on hyphae that are erect, cylindrical, medium brown in color, smooth, with truncated ends and proliferating sympodially. The conidiogenous cells appear at terminal or lateral locations on top of branched conidiophores; they are also medium brown in color, smooth and cylindrical, and also grow sympodially.<ref name="NewFungi2"/><ref name="Capnodiales"/>

:The macroconidiophores are erect, cylindrical, between straight and sinuous in shape, medium brown in color, smooth, and unbranched or branched only above.<ref name="NewFungi2"/><ref name="Capnodiales"/>

The conidia themselves are smooth, guttulate (i.e. spores containing one or more oil-like globules),<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.dcceew.gov.au/science-research/abrs/online-resources/glossaries/fungi#guttulate|title=Fungi of Australia Glossary|publisher=Australian Government: Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water|author=C.A. Grgurinovic}}</ref> between subcylindrical and narrowly obclavate in shape, with an apex obtuse or truncate and a truncate base; they occur in branched chains that are widest at the basal septum. The hila are inconspicuous or somewhat darkened and thickened, and aren't refractive.<ref name="NewFungi2"/><ref name="Capnodiales"/>

There has been no observation of chlamydospores.<ref name="Capnodiales"/>

In particular, ''X. strelitziicola'' presents hyphae measuring 2–3 μm in width; microconidiophores measuring 4–7 x 2–3 μm; conidiogenous cells measuring 7–15 x 2.5–3 μm; macroconidiophores measuring 30–100 x 2.5–3 μm; and conidia with hila that are 1-1.5 μm wide.<ref name="NewFungi2"/> [[File:Devriesia strelitziicola H-K.png|thumb|center|upright=2.0|Light microscopy images of several ''Xenodevriesia stretziicola'' conidia.]]

==Taxonomy and etymology== First described in 2009, the species was placed in the genus ''Devriesia'', located in the family Teratosphaeriaceae, under the name ''Devriesia strelitziicola'', in which the epithet is a reference to the host ''Strelitzia''.<ref name="Capnodiales"/>

In 2019 it was moved to its own genus ''Xenodevriesia'' and its own family Xenodevriesiaceae, after a phylogenetic analysis of the entire Dothideomycetes class showed its independence from the genus ''Devriesia''.<ref name="NewFungi2">{{cite journal|journal=Fungal Systematics and Evolution|volume=3|date=1 June 2019|doi=10.3114/fuse.2019.03.06|pages=57–134|vauthors=Crous PW, Schumacher RK, Akulov A, Thangavel R, Hernández-Restrepo M, Carnegie AJ, Cheewangkoon R, Wingfield MJ, Summerell BA, Quaedvlieg W, Coutinho TA, Roux J, Wood AR, Giraldo A, Groenewal JZ|title=New and Interesting Fungi. 2|publisher=Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute|pmid= 32467898|pmc=7235984|doi-access=free|issue=1}}</ref>
