==History==
=== Foundation 1903–1950 === The company was founded in 1903 by August Storck, who later changed his name to August Oberwelland.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.wiwo.de/unternehmen/suesswarenhersteller-das-bittere-nasch-erbe-von-storck-chef-axel-oberwelland-seite-2/5616410-2.html|title=Süßwarenhersteller: Das bittere Nasch-Erbe von Storck-Chef Axel Oberwelland|access-date=7 May 2015|archive-date=5 December 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211205093230/https://www.wiwo.de/unternehmen/suesswarenhersteller-das-bittere-nasch-erbe-von-storck-chef-axel-oberwelland-seite-2/5616410-2.html|url-status=live}}</ref> He was the owner of the Oberwellandhof in Werther (Westphalia) and opened the Werther candy factory. With only three employees, the factory supplied candy to retailers in the surrounding area. The First World War had a negative impact on development.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=Redaktion |first=BÖRSE ONLINE |date=2021-07-30 |title=Axel Oberwelland: Der Herr der Bonbons - der unbekannte Milliardär |url=https://www.boerse-online.de//nachrichten/aktien/axel-oberwelland-der-herr-der-bonbons-der-unbekannte-milliardaer-20314810.html |access-date=2024-12-20 |website=www.boerse-online.de |language=de-de}}</ref>
In 1921, the management of the company was passed on to Hugo Oberwelland, the youngest son of the founder, who was ill at the time. In 1934, the "1 Pfennig Riesen" came onto the market, which according to the company was the first branded candy in Germany. By 1937, the number of employees had risen to 71, products were distributed throughout the country, and in 1938 the first branch opened in Schötmar. After the Second World War additional investments were made.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1">{{Cite web |title=Startseite |url=https://www.westfalen-regional.de/de/storck/ |access-date=2024-12-20 |website=www.westfalen-regional.de |language=de}}</ref>
From 11 September 1942 to 7 September 1943, Storck operated a ''Frauenarbeitslager'' (Women's labor camp) in Werther. The camp was part of the ''Strafgefangenenlager Oberems'' (Oberems prison camp).<ref>{{Cite book |last=Isernhinke |first=Karina |title=Das Strafgefangenenlager Oberems: das nationalsozialistische Lagersystem im Gebiet des heutigen Kreises Gütersloh |date=2015 |publisher=Verl. für Regionalgeschichte |isbn=978-3-89534-893-8 |edition=1. === Move to Halle and introduction of brands 1950–1990 === After the war, a new factory was built in neighbouring Halle (Westphalia), which was considered to be an "industrial plant in the countryside" when it was built.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Donath |first=Nicole |title=Storck: Hinter den Kulissen des größten Arbeitgebers in Halle |url=https://www.nw.de/lokal/kreis_guetersloh/halle/20750760_Storck-Hinter-den-Kulissen-des-groessten-Arbeitgebers-in-Halle.html |access-date=2024-12-20 |website=Neue Westfälische |language=de}}</ref> By reforesting the area, voluntary compensatory measures were implemented, which since then has been made a requirement in planning approval procedures and development plans in Germany. The factory received a rail connection to the Haller Willem railway line. Storck bought its own tank wagons for the transport of raw materials and closed freight wagons for the transport of finished goods.<ref name=":0" />
In 1949, the "Storck 2 Pfennig Riesen" came onto the market. In 1950, Storck introduced a performance-related bonus for employees. In the course of the ''Wirtschaftswunderjahren'' (Economic miracle), both the number of employees and the production volume increased. In 1953, exports and in 1954, chocolate production began. In 1958, Storck introduced social benefits for employees. The second generation change took place in 1971, when Klaus Oberwelland took over the management of the company. In 1975, Storck introduced a company pension plan.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />
From 1962 onwards, the company developed many of its most important brands to this day within two decades with ''nimm2'' (1962), ''Merci'' (1965), ''Campino'' (1966), ''Werther's Original'' (1969, sold in Germany until 1998 under the name ''Werthers Echte'') and ''Toffifee'' (1973). Storck later took over the ''Dickmann'' company (1981) and developed the ''Knoppers'' brand (1983).<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />
=== Recent developments 1990–present === In 1988, Storck took over the traditional company Bendicks of Mayfair from Winchester in England. In 1993, a new production facility was built in Ohrdruf, Thuringia.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Advertorial |date=2022-10-01 |title=Thüringer Bogen: Wir haben den Bogen raus |url=https://wirtschaftsspiegel-thueringen.com/2022/10/01/thueringer-bogen-wir-haben-den-bogen-raus/ |access-date=2025-01-10 |website=Wirtschaftsspiegel Thüringen |language=de}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Schweigsame Riesen im Hause Storck - WELT |url=https://www.welt.de/print-wams/article119401/Schweigsame-Riesen-im-Hause-Storck.html |access-date=2025-01-10 |website=DIE WELT |language=de}}</ref> Further market launches followed, including ''merci Crocant'' (1994), ''merci Pur'' (1995) and ''nimm2 Lachgummi'' (1996). In 1998, the company was restructured, and management was moved to Berlin.<ref>{{Cite news |title=Berlin: Herr der Schokoladen gestorben |url=https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/herr-der-schokoladen-gestorben-1214875.html |access-date=2025-01-10 |work=Der Tagesspiegel Online |language=de-DE |issn=1865-2263}}</ref>
The third generation change took place in 2003. Axel Oberwelland has been chairman of the management of August Storck KG since then, which is the parent company for the national subsidiaries.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Redaktion |first=BÖRSE ONLINE |date=2021-07-30 |title=Axel Oberwelland: Der Herr der Bonbons - der unbekannte Milliardär |url=https://www.boerse-online.de//nachrichten/aktien/axel-oberwelland-der-herr-der-bonbons-der-unbekannte-milliardaer-20314810.html |access-date=2025-01-10 |website=www.boerse-online.de |language=de-de}}</ref><ref>{{Cite news |title=Berlin: Herr der Schokoladen gestorben |url=https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/herr-der-schokoladen-gestorben-1214875.html |access-date=2025-01-10 |work=Der Tagesspiegel Online |language=de-DE |issn=1865-2263}}</ref> Another market launch since the change was Chocolat Pavot (2003).<ref>{{Cite web |title=WirtschaftsWoche |url=https://www.wiwo.de/unternehmen/suesswarenhersteller-das-bittere-nasch-erbe-von-storck-chef-axel-oberwelland-seite-3/5616410-3.html |access-date=2025-01-10 |website=www.wiwo.de |language=de}}</ref>
In 2005, Storck acquired the rights to the Rachengold and Atemgold brands from the Karlsruhe company Ragolds. August Storck KG's turnover was 1.2 billion euros that year.<ref>{{Cite web |last= |first= |date=2005-05-07 |title=Storck schluckt Rachengold |url=https://www.morgenpost.de/printarchiv/wirtschaft/article104451029/Storck-schluckt-Rachengold.html |access-date=2025-01-16 |website=www.morgenpost.de |language=de}}</ref>
For its 100th anniversary, Storck developed a new company logo and slogan "Part of Your World". In addition, the name Storck has been printed on every brand packaging since then.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Storck stellt sich mit neuer Optik und jüngerer Spitze neu auf - HORIZONT |url=https://www.horizont.net/marketing/nachrichten/-Storck-stellt-sich-mit-neuer-Optik-und-juengerer-Spitze-neu-auf-45204 |access-date=2025-01-16 |website=www.horizont.net |language=de-de}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last1=Kaufmann |first1=Matthias |last2=von Frentz |first2=Clemens |date=2004-02-09 |title=Axel Oberwelland: Der Herr der Bonbons |url=https://www.manager-magazin.de/unternehmen/karriere/a-204434.html |access-date=2025-01-16 |website=www.manager-magazin.de |language=de}}</ref>
From 2009, the previously independent sales companies Storck, Merci and Dickmann were gradually merged and a new pricing system was introduced.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Storck legt Töchter zusammen |url=https://www.lebensmittelzeitung.net/handel/nachrichten/Storck-Legt-Toechter-zusammen-74698 |access-date=2025-01-16 |website=Lebensmittelzeitung |language=de}}</ref>

In 2023, the company built a logistics centre near the A33 and an additional factory entrance so that arriving trucks no longer have to drive through Halle (Westphalia).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Küppers |first=Von Stefan |title=Storck baut neues Logistikzentrum an der A33 in Halle |url=https://www.westfalen-blatt.de/owl/kreis-guetersloh/halle/storck-waechst-logistikzentrum-werkzufahrt-a33-2818559 |access-date=2025-01-29 |website=www.westfalen-blatt.de |language=de}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Hochregallager fertig gebaut |url=https://betriebserweiterung-halle.storck.com/de/nSU9APHr/hochregallager-fertig-gebaut/?in=keaQja9a |access-date=2025-01-29 |website=Informationen zur Betriebserweiterung Halle – Storck |language=de}}</ref>

== Controversy == In February 2020, part of the company premises in Halle (Westphalia) was occupied. The reason was the planned clearing of a piece of forest on Steinhausener Weg on the factory site. Forest squatters erected platforms and high-wire structures on the trees of the forest they called ''Steini''. The barricade couldn’t be cleared due to the squatters' disobedience towards the forest workers and the police's lack of willingness.<ref>{{Cite web |last1=Damme |first1=Jonas |last2=Kaiser |first2=Heiko |date=2021-02-23 |title=Aktivisten aus dem Altkreis und Bielefeld: 30 junge Menschen besetzen "Steini" {{!}} Halle |url=https://www.haller-kreisblatt.de/lokal/halle/22960162_Aktivisten-aus-dem-Altkreis-und-Bielefeld-30-junge-Menschen-besetzen-Steini.html |access-date=2025-02-10 |website=Haller Kreisblatt |language=de}}</ref> A new occupation took place at the beginning of the woodland clearing season in October 2021.
