The uppermost section of the river produces the Gries waterfall.<ref name="aeiou"/>

The primary economic activity of the valley is agriculture and tourism. One of the main attractions of the valley is the Pitztal underground funicular, which takes passengers from Mittelberg ({{Convert|1736|m|abbr=on|disp=semicolon}}) to Mittelbergferner mountain ({{Convert|2841|m|abbr=on|disp=semicolon}}).<ref name="aeiou"/> Important villages in the valley include Wenns ({{Convert|962|m|abbr=on|disp=semicolon}}), Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal ({{Convert|1366|m|abbr=on|disp=semicolon}}), and Arzl im Pitztal ({{Convert|880|m|abbr=on|disp=semicolon}}).<ref name="aeiou"/>
