'''''Macquaria''''' is a genus of medium-sized, predatory temperate perches endemic to Australia. They are found in rivers of the eastern part of the continent.<ref name=FishBase>{{FishBase genus | genus = Macquaria| month = February | year = 2014}}</ref>

==Species== The currently recognized species in this genus are:<ref name=Cof>{{Cof genus | genus = Macquaria| |access-date=2025-03-24}}</ref> * ''Macquaria ambigua'' <small>(J. Richardson, 1845)</small>, commonly known as golden perch or "yellowbelly" * ''Macquaria australasica'' <small>(G. Cuvier, 1830)</small>, commonly known as Macquarie perch * ''Macquaria wujalwujalensis'' <small>(Pusey & Kennard, 2001)</small>, commonly known as Bloomfield River cod One fossil species is known in †''Macquaria avus'' <small>(Woodward, 1902)</small> (=''Ctenolates avus'' <small>Woodward, 1902</small>) from Miocene-aged freshwater deposits near Nimbin.<ref>{{Cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=TuwbAAAAMAAJ |title=Records of the Geological Survey of New South Wales |date=1905 |publisher=Department of Mines, Geological Survey of New South Wales. |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Turner |first1=Susan |last2=Long |first2=John |date=2016 |title=The Woodward factor: Arthur Smith Woodward's legacy to geology in Australia and Antarctica |url=https://www.lyellcollection.org/doi/10.1144/SP430.15 |journal=Geological Society, London, Special Publications |language=en |volume=430 |issue=1 |pages=261–288 |doi=10.1144/SP430.15 |bibcode=2016GSLSP.430..261T |issn=0305-8719|url-access=subscription }}</ref><ref name=":0" /> Many fossil remains assigned to this genus are known from the Eocene to the Miocene of Australia. However, it is uncertain whether they belong to this genus or to ''Percalates'' (formerly subsumed within it).<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Australian freshwater fish fossils with occurrence during Tertiary |url=https://www.peter.unmack.net/biogeog/html/appendices/appendixi.html |access-date=2025-03-24 |website=www.peter.unmack.net}}</ref>

==Taxonomy== Previously, the two catadromous species ''Macquaria colonorum'' and ''M. novemaculeata'' were also placed in this genus. However, more recent phylogenetic studies have found they are not closely related to the two other species of the genus, and they are now placed in the genus ''Percalates'' in the monotypic family Percalatidae.<ref name=":13">{{Cite web |last1=Fricke |first1=R. |last2=Eschmeyer |first2=W.
