Construction on the dam began in 2002 and it was inaugurated by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 12 April 2013. It is {{Convert|62|m|ft|abbr=on}} tall and impounds a reservoir with a storage capacity of {{Convert|110000000|m3|acre.ft|abbr=on}}. The primary purpose of the dam is to supply water for the irrigation of {{Convert|10450|ha|acre|abbr=on}} in Marivan County.
