== Filmmaking style == Some critics note that Karthik's directorial films usually have plot twists, needledropping of songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja, flamboyance inspired by Quentin Tarantino's films, and the inclusion of real-life world events and politics in the form of messaging.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Singaravel |first=Bharathy |date=2022-02-14 |title=From Petta to Mahaan: The increasingly chaotic politics of Karthik Subbaraj |url=https://www.thenewsminute.com/tamil-nadu/petta-mahaan-increasingly-chaotic-politics-karthik-subbaraj-160968 |access-date=2025-05-16 |website=The News Minute |language=en}}</ref><ref name=":2" /> Karthik, however, has stated that he prefers not to associate with any particular filmmaking style as he seeks to reinvent himself with every new film, noting how he intentionally avoided including a plot twist in ''Jagame Thandhiram'', which disappointed some audiences.<ref name=":2">{{Cite web |last=M V |first=Vivek |date=22 October 2022 |title=Interview: A decade of Karthik Subbaraj |url=https://www.deccanherald.com/entertainment/interview-a-decade-of-karthik-subbaraj-1155768.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231021161926/https://www.deccanherald.com/entertainment/interview-a-decade-of-karthik-subbaraj-1155768.html |archive-date=21 October 2023 |access-date=2023-09-13 |website=Deccan Herald}}</ref>
