The township of Elizabeth was established in 1955, with Elizabeth South railway station the first to be constructed in the area.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/digitalpubs/placenamesofsouthaustralia/E.pdf |publisher=State Library of South Australia |work=Place Names of South Australia |title=Elizabeth |page=11 |access-date=15 July 2023}}</ref> Elizabeth station opened on June 27 1960 in anticipation of increased demand from the nearby town centre and shopping district opening later in 1960.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Railway Stations in Elizabeth |url=https://playfordspast.recollect.net.au/nodes/view/20199 |access-date=2023-07-15 |website=Playford's Past}}</ref> The station was first rebuilt in 1999 with one island platform and shelter, which was accessible by an underground pedestrian subway.{{Needs-cite|date=July 2023}}

Infrastructure Australia had previously identified Elizabeth as a terminus station for services operated by electric trains. Under the proposal, the Gawler line would be electrified between Adelaide and Elizabeth, with diesel 3000 class railcars used to service stations beyond Elizabeth.<ref>{{Cite web |date=30 August 2018 |title=Project Evaluation Summary: Gawler Rail Line Electrification and Modernisation Project |url=https://www.infrastructureaustralia.gov.au/sites/default/files/2019-06/Evaluation_summary-Gawler_Rail_Line_Final_0.pdf |website=Infrastructure Australia}}</ref> In July 2018, this proposal, along with a similar proposal for Salisbury railway station, was officially dropped in favour of full electrification.<ref>{{cite news |last=Langenberg |first=Adam |date=13 July 2018 |title=$615m Gawler electrification deal signed |url=https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/gawler-line-electrification-expected-to-be-completed-in-2020/news-story/6a228b49ae134aa83c3b96b1a0418d0f |work=The Advertiser|location=Adelaide |access-date=16 July 2018}}</ref>
