Born in Pomfret, Connecticut, Dawson received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Columbia University in 1921 and a Bachelor of Laws from Columbia Law School in 1923.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Columbia College (Columbia University). ==Federal judicial service==
On April 6, 1954, Dawson was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by Judge Henry W. Goddard. Dawson was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 23, 1954, and received his commission on April 27, 1954. Dawson served in that capacity until his death on August 3, 1964.<ref name="auto"/>
