Galaxy S4''' is a series of high-end Android-based smartphones manufactured and produced by Samsung Electronics as the 4th smartphone family of the Galaxy S series and was first shown publicly on March 14, 2013, at Samsung Mobile Unpacked in New York City. It is the successor to the Galaxy S III, which maintains a similar design, but with upgraded hardware, more sensors, and an increased focus on software features that take advantage of its hardware capabilities—such as the ability to detect when a finger is hovered over the screen, and expanded eye tracking functionality, it was released the previous year.<ref name="AndroidcentralSamsungGalaxyS4specs"/><ref name="TechradarSamsungGalaxyS4specs"/>
A hardware variant of the S4 became the first smartphone to support the emerging LTE Advanced mobile network standard (model number ''GT-I9506'' and ''SHV-E330''). The T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S4, named the model ('''SGH-M919'''), was released the same month.
The Galaxy S4's successor, the Galaxy S5, was announced by Samsung on February 24, 2014 ahead of a release on April 11, 2014.
The Galaxy S4 is among the earliest phones to feature a 1080p Full HD display, 1080p front camera video recording, and among few to feature temperature and humidity sensors and a touch screen able to detect a floating finger. ==Sales and shipping== The S4 was made available in late April 2013 on 327 carriers in 155 countries.<ref name="ibtimes">{{cite news|url=http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/446284/20130314/samsung-galaxy-s4-launched-new-york.htm|title=Samsung Launches "Slimmer Yet Stronger" Galaxy S4 in New York|last=Gilbert|first=David|date=14 March 2013|newspaper=International Business Times|access-date=15 March 2013|archive-date=18 March 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130318111607/http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/446284/20130314/samsung-galaxy-s4-launched-new-york.htm|url-status=live}}</ref> It became Samsung's fastest selling smartphone and eventually Samsung's best-selling smartphone with 20 million sold worldwide in the first two months,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_has_reportedly_shipped_20_million_galaxy_s4_units-news-6313.php|title=Samsung has shipped 20 million Galaxy S4 units already|publisher=GSMArena|access-date=2013-08-28|archive-date=2013-09-06|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130906214211/http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_has_reportedly_shipped_20_million_galaxy_s4_units-news-6313.php|url-status=live}}</ref> and 40 million in the first six months.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=shm&sid1=105&oid=015&aid=0002968140|title=갤럭시S4 판매 4000만대 넘었다"...갤스3보다 한달 빨라|date=23 October 2013|newspaper=Korea Economic Daily|access-date=23 October 2013|archive-date=29 October 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131029192420/http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=shm&sid1=105&oid=015&aid=0002968140|url-status=live}}</ref>

The whole pixel density also increased from 306 to 441 ppi, surfaced with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. An added ''glove mode'' option increases touch sensitivity to allow detecting touch input through gloves. ===Model variants=== Several different model variants of the S4 are sold, with most variants varying mainly in handling regional network types and bands. To prevent grey market reselling, models of the S4 manufactured after July 2013 implement a regional lockout system in certain regions, requiring that the first SIM card used on a European and North American model be from a carrier in that region. Samsung stated that the lock would be removed once a local SIM card is used.<ref name=verge-samsunglock>{{cite web|title=Samsung region locking the Note 3 to keep out resellers|url=https://www.theverge.com/2013/9/26/4772820/samsung-region-locks-european-galaxy-note-3-within-europe|work=The Verge|date=26 September 2013|access-date=30 September 2013|archive-date=29 September 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130929031612/http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/26/4772820/samsung-region-locks-european-galaxy-note-3-within-europe|url-status=live}}</ref> SIM format for all variants is Micro-SIM, which can have one or two depending on model. {|class="wikitable" style="text-align: center; font-size:85%" |- !Model !GT-I9500<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/smart-phone/GT-I9500ZWEXFA|title=GT-I9500 OVERVIEW|publisher=Samsung|access-date=26 November 2013|archive-date=3 December 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131203001005/http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/smart-phone/GT-I9500ZWEXFA|url-status=live}}</ref> !style="padding-left:1px; padding-right:1px;"|SHV-E300K/L/S<ref name="SamMobile SHV-E300S">{{cite web|url=http://www.sammobile.com/2013/04/10/galaxy-s4s-latest-benchmark-confirms-samsungs-exynos-5-octa-kills-qualcomms-snapdragon-600/ |title=Galaxy S4′s latest benchmark confirms Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa kills Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600|author=DannyD |date=10 April 2013|publisher=SamMobile|access-date=10 April 2013 |archive-date=10 April 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130410114859/http://www.sammobile.com/2013/04/10/galaxy-s4s-latest-benchmark-confirms-samsungs-exynos-5-octa-kills-qualcomms-snapdragon-600/ |url-status=live }}</ref><ref name="SHV-E300KDS3KC-spec">{{cite web |url=http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/kt/SHV-E300KDS3KC-spec |title=SHV-E300K 삼성 갤럭시 S4 - 스펙 |publisher=Samsung |access-date=28 April 2013 |language=ko |archive-date=27 June 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130627161854/http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/kt/SHV-E300KDS3KC-spec |url-status=live }}</ref><ref name="SHV-E300LDS3LC-spec">{{cite web|url=http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/lgt/SHV-E300LDS3LC-spec |title=SHV-E300L 삼성 갤럭시 S4 - 스펙 |publisher=Samsung |access-date=28 April 2013|language=ko|archive-date=9 May 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130509032757/http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/lgt/SHV-E300LDS3LC-spec |url-status=live }}</ref><ref name="SHV-E300SDS3SC-spec">{{cite web|url=http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/skt/SHV-E300SDS3SC-spec |title=SHV-E300S 삼성 갤럭시 S4 - 스펙 |publisher=Samsung |access-date=28 April 2013|language=ko|archive-date=7 May 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130507052029/http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/skt/SHV-E300SDS3SC-spec |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.sammobile.com/2013/04/02/galaxy-s4s-korean-variant-shv-e300sk-to-feature-exynos-5-octa-clocked-at-1-8ghz-confirmed-by-fcc/ |title=Galaxy S4′s Korean variant (SHV-E300S/K) to feature Exynos 5 Octa clocked at 1.8GHz, confirmed by FCC |author=FaryaabS |date=2 April 2013|publisher=SamMobile |access-date=11 April 2013 |archive-date=6 April 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130406061357/http://www.sammobile.com/2013/04/02/galaxy-s4s-korean-variant-shv-e300sk-to-feature-exynos-5-octa-clocked-at-1-8ghz-confirmed-by-fcc/|url-status=live }}</ref> ! style="padding-left:1px; padding-right:1px;"|SHV-E330K/L/S<ref name="SHV-E330LZB1LC-spec">{{cite web |url=http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/lgt/SHV-E330LZB1LC-spec |title=SHV-E330L 삼성 갤럭시 S4 LTE-A |publisher=Samsung |access-date=29 December 2013 |language=ko |archive-date=31 December 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131231001958/http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/lgt/SHV-E330LZB1LC-spec |url-status=live }}</ref> ! The S4 received many positive reviews, though it also received some criticism.
Gareth Beavis of TechRadar wrote that the phone is a "stunning smartphone that won't let you down". It received praise for its "stunning screen", "superfast processor", and "Great camera", but was criticized for user interface issues.<ref>{{Cite news | url=https://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s4-1137602/review | title=Samsung Galaxy S4 review | first=Gareth | last=Beavis | work=TechRadar | date=August 17, 2015 | archive-date=December 10, 2024 | access-date=December 10, 2024 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241210101020/https://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s4-1137602/review | url-status=live }}</ref>

''TIME'''s McCraken said the S4 is a smartphone with everything; it has the biggest screen and the most built-in features. Technology journalist Walt Mossberg described the S4 as "a good phone, just not a great one". Mossberg wrote: "while I admire some of its features, overall, it isn't a game-changer." He criticized the software as "especially weak" and "often gimmicky, duplicative of standard Android apps, or, in some cases, only intermittently functional." He urged readers to "consider the more polished-looking, and quite capable, HTC One, rather than defaulting to the latest Samsung."<ref>{{cite news |url=https://allthingsd.com/20130423/galaxy-s-4-is-a-good-but-not-a-great-step-up |title=Galaxy S 4 Is a Good, but Not a Great, Step Up |last=Mossberg |first=Walt | authorlink=Walt Mossberg | work=AllThingsD |date=23 April 2013 |archive-date=26 June 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130626052730/http://allthingsd.com/20130423/galaxy-s-4-is-a-good-but-not-a-great-step-up/ |url-status=live }}</ref>
''Consumer Reports'' named the S4 as the top smartphone as of May 2013 due to its screen quality, multitasking support, and built-in IR blaster.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/20/tech/mobile/galaxy-s4-top-smartphone |title=Samsung Galaxy S4 named top smartphone by Consumer Reports |last=Kelly |first=Heather |date=21 May 2013 |work=CNN Tech |publisher=CNN |access-date=14 June 2013 |archive-date=7 June 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130607100327/http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/20/tech/mobile/galaxy-s4-top-smartphone |url-status=live }}</ref>
Critics noted that about half of the internal storage on the S4's 16 GB model was taken up by its system software, using 1 GB more than the S III and leaving only 8.5 to 9.15 GB for the storage of other data, including downloaded apps (some of which cannot be moved to the SD card). Samsung initially stated that the space was required for the S4's new features, but following a report regarding the issue on the BBC series ''Watchdog'', Samsung stated that it would review the possibility of optimising the S4's operating system to use less local drive space in a future update.<ref>{{cite news |url=https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/samsung-defends-16gb-s4s-mere-8gb-of-usable-storage/ |title=Samsung defends 16 GB S4's mere 8 GB of usable storage |last=Westaway |first=Luke |work=CNET |date=2 May 2013 |archive-date=5 May 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130505065414/http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-defends-16gb-s4s-mere-8gb-of-usable-storage-50011111/ |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/samsung-promises-to-review-galaxy-s4-storage-space-after-watchdog-expos--1151872 |title=Samsung promises to review Galaxy S4 storage space after Watchdog exposé |last=Solomon |first=Kate |date=16 May 2013 |work=TechRadar |publisher=Future plc |access-date=19 May 2013 |archive-date=7 June 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130607042356/http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/samsung-promises-to-review-galaxy-s4-storage-space-after-watchdog-expos--1151872 |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/mobile-phone/3444658/samsung-galaxy-s4-storage-woes/ |title=Samsung Galaxy S4 suffers from storage woes |last=Martin |first=Chris |date=29 April 2013 |work=PC Advisor |publisher=IDG |access-date=20 May 2013 |archive-date=1 June 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130601193719/http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/mobile-phone/3444658/samsung-galaxy-s4-storage-woes/ |url-status=live }}</ref> Storage optimizations were brought in an update first released in June 2013, which frees 80 MB of internal storage and restores the ability to move apps to the device's microSD card.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.theverge.com/2013/6/6/4401652/samsung-galaxy-s4-update-storage-improvements-sd-card-apps |title=Samsung Galaxy S4 update addresses storage complaints with move to SD card feature |last=Souppouris |first=Aaron |date=6 June 2013 |work=The Verge |publisher=Vox Media |access-date=6 June 2013 |archive-date=8 June 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130608174709/http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/6/4401652/samsung-galaxy-s4-update-storage-improvements-sd-card-apps |url-status=live }}</ref> ===Commercial reception=== The S4 reached 10 million pre-orders from retailers in the first two weeks after its announcement.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://thetechstuff.com/3024/samsung-galaxy-s4-is-already-hit-with-10-million-pre-orders-two-weeks|title=Samsung Galaxy S4 is already a hit with 10 million pre-orders in two weeks|last=Jones|first=Luke|publisher=The Tech Stuff|access-date=19 April 2013|archive-date=29 October 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131029193638/http://thetechstuff.com/3024/samsung-galaxy-s4-is-already-hit-with-10-million-pre-orders-two-weeks|url-status=live}}</ref> In the United States, this prompted Samsung to announce that due to larger than expected demand, the roll out of devices on U.S. carriers Sprint and T-Mobile would be slower than expected.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/apr/25/samsung-galaxy-s4-launch-date|title=S4 launch date delays|date=25 April 2013|work=The Guardian|access-date=25 April 2013|location=London|archive-date=1 October 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131001005551/http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/apr/25/samsung-galaxy-s4-launch-date|url-status=live}}</ref>

On December 2, 2013, Canadian Richard Wygand uploaded a YouTube video describing his phone combusting.<ref>{{cite web|last=Wygand|first=Richard|title=samsung galaxy s4 caught fire proof for samsung|website=YouTube|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc4duKuPrQ0|access-date=13 December 2013|archive-date=13 December 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131213074834/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc4duKuPrQ0|url-status=live}}{{unreliable source?|date=January 2014}}</ref> The phone was plugged into AC power overnight; he woke up to the smell of smoke and burning matter. In the video, the power cord was shown to be severely burnt and showed warped damage to the power plug. Later in the video, Wygand describes how he attempted to get a replacement: {{blockquote|We have a service provider; it's Rogers here in Canada. Rogers [has] seen it, and they freaked out. They even said, 'You could send it in through us — it'll take three weeks — or just go see Samsung.' The Samsung reps just said that they need video proof, and now we have to call it in. So we're gonna upload this, send it to Samsung. We'll let you know how it goes.}}
In his second video, uploaded a few days after the first one, Wygand states that in order to receive a replacement phone, Samsung allegedly asked him to sign a legal document requiring him to remove the video, remain silent about the agreement, and surrender any future claims against the company.<ref>{{cite web|last=Wygand|first=Richard|title=et tu, samsung? In an interview with Mashable, Wygand said that since he posted the second video, Samsung refused to replace his phone for not signing the document and no further response from Samsung was received afterwards. However, an official spokesman from Samsung told Mashable, "Samsung takes the safety and security of our customers very seriously. Our Samsung Canada team is in touch with the customer, and is investigating the issue."<ref>{{cite web|last=Strange|first=Adario|title=Galaxy S4 Customer Posts Defective Phone Video, Samsung Demands Removal|date=11 December 2013|url=http://mashable.com/2013/12/10/samsung-s4-burns-up-user-posts-video-samsung-ask-him-to-remove-it/|publisher=Mashable|access-date=13 December 2013|archive-date=13 December 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131213090734/http://mashable.com/2013/12/10/samsung-s4-burns-up-user-posts-video-samsung-ask-him-to-remove-it/|url-status=live}}</ref>
In the UK, companies which sold the S4 have varied in their reactions to claims by worried customers for replacement batteries under the Sale of Goods Act. Amazon, for example, have simply refunded part of the purchase price to allow for the cost of a replacement battery. O2 however insist that the complete phone, with the faulty battery, be returned to them so that they in turn can send it to Samsung to consider the claim. ==See also== *Samsung Electronics *Samsung Galaxy *Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S smartphones *Samsung Galaxy S4 Active *Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini *Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom ==References== {{Reflist}} ==External links== {{Commons category|Samsung Galaxy S4}} *{{official website|https://www.samsung.com}} {{S-start}} {{S-bef| before = Samsung Galaxy S III}} {{S-ttl| title = Samsung Galaxy S4| years = 2013}} {{S-aft| after = Samsung Galaxy S5}} {{S-end}} {{Samsung Galaxy S|smartphones=yes|tablets=yes}} {{Samsung smartphones}} {{Samsung phones}} Category:Android (operating system) devices S4 Category:Mobile phones introduced in 2013 Category:Mobile phones with user-replaceable battery Category:Mobile phones with infrared transmitter Category:Mobile phones with self-capacitive touch screen layer
