Its functions include developing capabilities, operational readiness, and conducting surveillance and air defense operations within its area of responsibility.
Radar Units were each assigned to four Sector Commands:
# Sector Command I in Medan # Sector Command II in Makassar # Sector Command III in Biak Numfor # Sector Command IV in Jakarta Air Wings were each assigned to four Groups:
# Group I Transport # Group II Helicopter # Group III Combat # Group IV Special
== History == The nucleus of the command was the Operational Group, which was formed on 15 June 1951, based on a decree from the Chief of Staff of the Air Force.<ref>{{cite web |first=Mohammad |last=Jaenudin |url=https://www.atmago.com/posts/sejarah-pembentukan-komando-operasi-tni-au-koopsau_913e745d-f3f2-4338-abec-b865f9184a4a |title=Sejarah Pembentukan Komando Operasi TNI AU (KOOPSAU) |website=atmago.com |date=15 June 2020 |language=ID}}</ref> It was formed through the merger of five operational squadrons to form an operational group.
On 27 July 1954, its name was changed to the Composition Group Command (''Komando Group Komposisi'' / KGK), which remained in effect until 5 October 1959. It was then renamed the Air Force Operation Command until 21 June 1976. After that, its name was changed again to the Air Combat Forces Command (''Komando Pasukan Tempur Udara'' / Kopatdara) until 10 May 1985.<ref>{{cite book |author=Dinas Penerangan Angkatan Udara (Dispenau) |title=Sejarah TNI Angkatan Udara (1970—1979) |trans-title=History of the Indonesian Air Force 1970-1979 |date=2004 |location=Jakarta |publisher=Subdisjarah Diswatpersau |language=id |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1TiStXcTZQ0C&pg=PA2 |pages=19}}</ref>
On 10 May 1985, in accordance with the reorganization of the Indonesian Armed Forces (ABRI), Kopatdara was renamed again to the Indonesian Air Force Operation Command (Koopsau), as it is known today.<ref>{{cite web |first=Michelle |last=Gabriela |url=https://www.tempo.co/politik/73-tahun-komando-operasi-tni-au-ini-asal-mulanya-berdiri-48660 |title=73 Tahun Komando Operasi TNI AU, Ini Asal Mulanya Berdiri |website=Tempo.co |date=16 June 2024 |language=ID}}</ref>
