Other contemporary philosophers uncovered new insights into wisdom as applied to the study of ontology within a paradigm of a modern "secular philosophy". Following Immanuel kant's lead, Lewis White Beck argued that the analysis of wisdom found within the works of Thomas Acquinas, Blaise Pascal, Soren Kierkegaard, and William James allows one to avoid the criticisms raised by Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and the Logical Positivists against Plato's mystical concept of the hidden "unknowable beyond." Due to its historical existential importance, such a concept cannot be dismissed merely as a product of mankind's imagination or blindly embraced on purely dogmatic grounds.
