The word is a portmanteau of ''vajayjay''<ref name="Hewitt2010">{{cite book|author=Jennifer Love Hewitt|title=The Day I Shot Cupid: Hello, My Name Is Jennifer Love Hewitt and I'm a Love-aholic|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=2eQ0T3ZCUpYC|date=23 March 2010|publisher=Voice|isbn=978-1-4013-4112-1}}</ref> (a euphemism for ''vagina'')<ref>{{cite news|title=How Shonda Rhimes Unwillingly Coined The Term 'Vajayjay'|url=https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/how-shonda-rhimes-unwillingly-coined-the-term-vajayjay_n_5644f6f1e4b0603773484e75|website=Huffington Post|first=Alanna|last=Vagianos|date=11 December 2015}}</ref> and ''bedazzle''.{{efn|A Bedazzler is a home appliance used to fasten rhinestones to cloth.}} The process of creating a vajazzle is known as '''vajazzling'''. It involves the application of crystal ornaments onto the shaved mons pubis of a woman.
Vajazzling is typically carried out at beauty salons. Initially any pubic hair is removed from the mons pubis, typically by a bikini wax, after which rhinestones, Swarovski crystals or gemstones are glued onto the area.<ref name=Callaghan>{{cite magazine|magazine=Time|title=Bedazzling… below the belt?|url=https://healthland.time.com/2010/03/05/bedazzling-below-the-belt/|first=Tiffany|last=O'Callaghan|date=5 March 2010}}</ref> The result can last for up to seven days. The purpose of vajazzling is the visual aesthetic. There are no benefits in terms of sexual pleasure. Bruising or cuts can occur from the crystals during sexual intercourse. If glue is applied too soon after the pubic hair removal, it can cause an allergic reaction<ref>{{cite magazine|url=https://www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/a30421401/what-is-vajazzling-facts/|title=Here's Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Vajazzling|magazine=Cosmopolitan|date=13 January 2020|first=Alanna Lauren|last=Greco}}</ref> or bacterial infection.<ref name=Callaghan/> Vajazzling can also increase the risks of infection if it is not properly cleaned.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20406699_2,00.html|title=Vaginal Grooming: How Safe Are Down-There Beautification Trends?|author=Rosen, Peg|publisher=Health|access-date=2014-06-06|archive-date=2020-11-05|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201105231558/https://www.health.com/beauty/vaginal-grooming-how-safe-are-down-there-beautification-trends|url-status=dead}}</ref>
