== Origin == Although tinga is consumed throughout central and southern Mexico today, it is presumed to have a Pueblan origin. The first known published recipe for tinga appears in the 1881 cookbook ''Pueblan Cooking (La cocinera poblana).''<ref>{{Cite web |title=Tinga: Diccionario enciclopédico de la Gastronomía Mexicana |url=https://laroussecocina.mx/palabra/tinga/ |access-date=2026-03-04 |website=Larousse Cocina |language=es}}</ref><ref name=":0" />

In recent years this cuisine has been expanding across the borders and can be found in most Mexican restaurants. Determining the exact place "tinga" originated is difficult due to the lack of sufficient records and information about the dish.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Will |date=14 January 2022 |title=Chicken Tinga |url=https://homechefinstitute.com/chicken-tinga/ |access-date=28 November 2022 |website=The Home Chef Institute |language=en-US}}</ref>

In his ''Dictionary of Mexicanisms'' (1895), Francisco J. Santamaría defines "tinga" as a colloquial term to refer to something "vulgar" or "disorderly",<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |date=9 September 2017 |title=Guisos tradicionales de los hogares mexicanos |author=Miguel Angel Chen |url=https://foodandtravel.mx/guisos-tradicionales-de-los-hogares-mexicanos/ |access-date=9 May 2022 |website=Food and Travel México |language=es}}</ref> though he does not give the etymology of the word.
