Like the analogous tetrasulfur tetranitride {{chem2|S4N4}}, {{chem2|Se4N4}} is an orange solid. It is however less soluble and more shock-sensitive than {{chem2|S4N4}}.<ref>{{cite book |doi=10.1016/B978-0-444-88933-1.50025-8|year=1992 |last1=Klapötke |first1=T.M. |title=The Chemistry of Inorganic Ring Systems |chapter=Binary Selenium-Nitrogen Species and Related Compounds |series=Studies in Inorganic Chemistry |volume=14 |publisher=Elsevier|page=409|isbn=9780444889331 |editor=R. As determined by X-ray crystallography, {{chem2|Se4N4}} adopts a cage structure similar to that of {{chem2|S4N4}}. The Se−Se and Se−N distances are 2.740 and 1.800 Å, respectively. The N−Se−N angles are 90°.<ref name=Dehnicke>{{cite journal |doi=10.1002/zaac.19946200610|year=1994 |volume=620 |issue=6 |last1=Folkerts |first1=Hella |last2=Neumüller |first2=Bernhard |last3=Dehnicke |first3=Kurt |title=Synthese und Kristallstruktur einer neuen Modifikation von Tetraselentetranitrid, Se4N4|journal=Zeitschrift für anorganische und allgemeine Chemie |pages=1011–1015 }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |doi=10.1107/S0365110X66003475|year=1966 |volume=21 |issue=4 |last1=Bärnighausen |first1=H. |last2=von Volkmann |first2=T. |last3=Jander |first3=J. |title=Die Kristallstruktur von Tetrastickstofftetraselenid N4Se4 |journal=Acta Crystallographica |pages=571–577 |bibcode=1966AcCry..21..571B }}</ref>
