'''''Stern''''' ({{IPA|de|ʃtɛʁn|pron|De-Stern.ogg}}, German for "Star", stylized in all lowercase) is an illustrated, broadly left-liberal, weekly current affairs magazine published in Hamburg, Germany, by Gruner + Jahr, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann. Under the editorship (1948–1980) of its founder Henri Nannen, it attained a circulation of between 1.5 and 1.8 million, the largest in Europe's for a magazine of its kind.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Schröder |first=Jens |date=2016-02-12 |title=Historische Analyse: Spiegel und stern im 66-Jahre-Auflagentrend – Rekorde mit Kennedy und dem Irak-Krieg |language=de-DE |work={{ill|Meedia|de}} |url=https://meedia.de/2016/02/12/historische-analyse-spiegel-und-stern-im-66-jahre-auflagentrend-rekorde-mit-kennedy-und-dem-irak-krieg/ |access-date=2021-03-02}}</ref>
Unusually for a popular magazine in post-war West Germany, and most notably in the contributions to 1975 of Sebastian Haffner, ''Stern'' investigated the origin and nature of the preceding tragedies of German history. In 1983, however, its credibility was seriously damaged by its purchase and syndication of the forged Hitler Diaries. A sharp drop in sales anticipated the general fall in newsprint readership in the new century. By 2019, circulation had fallen under half a million.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/36508/umfrage/verkaufte-auflage-des-stern-seit-1995/|title=Stern: Verkaufte Auflage des Nachrichtenmagazins Stern in den Jahren 1995 bis 2020|publisher=Statista|language=de|date=January 2021|access-date=18 July 2021}}</ref>

Under Nannen's direction, {{lang|de|Stern}} sought to present itself as an exemplar of what in Germany is called {{lang|de|nutzwertiger Journalismus}} ('useful journalism').<ref>{{cite web |title=Profil |publisher=Gruner + Jahr |url=https://www.gujmedia.de/print/portfolio/stern/profil/ }}</ref> The emphasis is on providing sufficient background on topic to allow readers opportunity to arrive at their own judgements rather than have these decided for them editorially or (as was commonly the case in the tabloid output of rival publisher {{lang|de|Axel Springer|italic=no}}) in the headlines. As a result, articles tended to be longer and more investigative, while distinguished from those of the similarly directed {{lang|de|Der Spiegel}} by the wider range of social and life-style issues covered, and by a greater reliance of illustration and graphic design.
===Breaks with the Adenauer consensus=== Stern was open to the questioning, from a liberal and left perspective, of the post-war political and social order in West Germany identified with the long Chancellorship (1949–1963) of Konrad Adenauer.
In the 1962 {{lang|de|Spiegel|nocat=y}} affair, Stern denounced as violations of constitutional norms and press freedom, the effective closure by the government of the magazine's publishing rival. In a contest seen a key turning point in the culture of the Federal Republic away from the deference demanded by the old {{lang|de|Obrigkeitsstaat}} ('authoritarian state'),<ref>{{Cite book |last=Taylor |first=Frederick |title=Exorcising Hitler |title-link=Exorcising Hitler |publisher=Bloomsbury Press |year=2011 |isbn=978-1-4088-1211-2 |location=London |page=371}}.</ref> Stern (together with Springer Press and {{lang|de|Die Zeit}}) offered {{lang|de|Der Spiegel}} presses, teletypes and office space so it could continue publishing while being investigated for national security disclosures.<ref>{{Cite news |title=Ein Land erwacht |url=http://magazin.spiegel.de/sp/2012/39/88754337/index.html |access-date=2021-03-03 |work=Der Spiegel |language=de }}</ref>
{{lang|de|Stern}} found nothing to extenuate in the later violence of the Red Army Faction (the "{{lang|de|Baader Meinhof|italic=no}} Gang"), but in the 1960s it had not been completely hostile to the student protest movement from which the "urban guerillas" first emerged. In June 1967, it permitted Sebastian Haffner to denounce the police response to a demonstration in West Berlin in which student protester Benno Ohnesorg was killed, as "a systematic, cold-blooded, planned pogrom".<ref>{{Cite magazine |last=Haffner |first=Sebastian |author-link=Sebastian Haffner |date=25 June 1967 |title=Nacht der langen Knüppel |url=http://www.glasnost.de/hist/apo/haf2Juni.html |magazine=Stern |language=de |quote=Es war ein systematischer Kaltblütig geplanter pogrom, begangen von der Berliner Polizei an Berliner Studenten}}</ref> In contrast the Springer's {{lang|de|Bild Zeitung}} responded: "Students threaten: We shoot back".<ref>{{Cite web|title=- Presse-Cäsar mit "Bild"-Zeitung|url=https://www.deutschlandfunk.de/presse-caesar-mit-bild-zeitung.870.de.html?dram:article_id=131525|access-date=2021-03-04|website=Deutschlandfunk Kultur| date=2 May 2012 |language=de-DE}}</ref>
Like the student left, {{lang|de|Stern}} was willing to break the relative post-war silence on the recent National-Socialist past. In serialisations Haffner developed his thesis that Hitler's war was a tragedy foretold in the circumstances of German unification in the nineteenth century. It was a position consistent with editorial support for the {{lang|de|Ostpolitik}} of the new Social-Democratic Chancellor Willi Brandt. As interpreted by many conservatives this amounted to an acceptance of Germany's postwar division, and territorial losses in the east, as permanent.
{{lang|de|Stern}} (No. 50, 1970) published Sven Simon's (Axel Springer Jr.) iconic picture of Brandt kneeling before the memorial to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on 20 Dezember 1970 on a double spread. It was accompanied by an interview with Brandt's Polish host, premier Józef Cyrankiewicz, with whom he had that day signed the Treaty of Warsaw.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2020-06-10|title=Kanzler, Kumpel, Kamerastar – Das "Image" des Politikers|url=https://willy-brandt.de/neuigkeiten/kanzler-kumpel-kamerastar-das-image-des-politikers/|access-date=2021-03-03|website=Bundeskanzler Willy Brandt Stiftung|language=de-DE}}</ref> At the same time, {{lang|de|Stern}} sought to discredit the rival conservative weekly ''Quick'', which in opposition to the Treaty had published material from its secret protocols. It accused the magazine's editor Hans van Nouhuys of having been a double agent, at one time in the employ of the East German {{lang|de|Stasi}}. {{lang|de|Stern}} successfully withstood the charge of defamation.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Knabe |first=Hubertus |title=Die unterwanderte Republik – Stasi im Westen |publisher=Propyläen Verlag |year=1999 |isbn=978-3-549-05589-2 |location=Berlin |language=de |authorlink=Hubertus Knabe}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|title=BERUFLICHES : Heinz Losecaat van Nouhuys – DER SPIEGEL 22/1975|url=https://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-41521081.html|access-date=2021-03-03|website=www.spiegel.de}}</ref>
===Encounters with second-wave feminism=== In a further challenge to settled post-war conventions, on June 6, 1971 {{lang|de|Stern}} appeared with the headline "We've had abortions!" (Issue 24/1971). In an action initiated by Alice Schwarzer, 374 women confessed to having had pregnancies terminated. They were protesting Paragraph 218 of West Germany's penal code, the {{lang|de|Strafgesetzbuch}} under which abortion was illegal. The taboo-breaking publicity was viewed by many as a milestone in the feminist revival of the 1970s.<ref name="AktionlautSchwarzerua">{{Cite web |date=4 June 2001 |title=Alice Schwarzer: "Ich bereue nichts" – Vor 30 Jahren initiierte die Feministin die Aktion "Wir haben abgetrieben" |url=http://www.frauenmediaturm.de/frauenmediaturm/events/ausstellungen/so-fing-es-an/ich-bereue-nichts/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110910214212/http://www.frauenmediaturm.de/frauenmediaturm/events/ausstellungen/so-fing-es-an/ich-bereue-nichts/ |archive-date=10 September 2011 |access-date=31 August 2015 |website=FrauenMediaTurm}}</ref> However, {{lang|de|Stern}}, itself became the target of the new feminism when, in 1978, Schwarzer and nine other women sued {{lang|de|Gruner + Jahr|italic=no}}, and Nannen, on the grounds that the magazine's frequent "cover girls" denied the human dignity of women by presenting them "as a mere sexual object".<ref>{{Cite book |last=Ghanem |first=Michael |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=PtGlDwAAQBAJ&q=Stern,+die+sogenannte+Sexismus-Klage,+Schwarzer,+1978 |title=Deutschlands verlorene 13 Jahre: Teil 11 A: Der Niedergang der Medien – Für eine Erneuerung der Medien |publisher=tredition |year=2019 |isbn=978-3-7482-7832-0 |location=Hamburg |language=de}}</ref> The immediate occasion was a picture of the model Grace Jones, described by Schwarzer in her monthly ''Emma'' (7/1978) as "a black woman, naked, in her hand a phallic microphone and around the shackles – heavy chains". (It later occurred to Schwarzer that they might also have complained of the image's racism).<ref>{{Cite web|title=1978: Die 1. Nannen protested that the magazine's nudes should be seen in the same light as Francisco Goya's "The Unclothed Maja" (1797) and that the freedom of the press was at issue. The complainants proved unable in law to indict soft-pornographic practices that were rife in the popular press, but Nannen allowed that the case had "made us think".<ref>{{Cite news |last=Schymura |first=Yvonne |date=12 July 2013 |title=Sexismus-Klage "Emma" vs. "Stern": Angriff auf die Männerpresse |language=de |work=Der Spiegel |url=https://www.spiegel.de/geschichte/sexismus-klage-emma-vs-stern-angriff-auf-die-maennerpresse-a-951193.html |access-date=2021-03-02}}</ref>
There was no obvious shift in the editorial culture of the magazine. The uncovered "cover-girl" tradition, sometimes in the form of celebrity shoots ("With Madonna alone at home", 10 January 1992), continued. Feminists also had occasion to object to article content. In 1990, {{lang|de|Stern}} published the title story "I am a masochist" in which author Sina-Aline Geißler discussed her literary coming-out as a member of the BDSM scene. This caused an intense public debate, and women later occupied the magazine's editorial offices alarmed at what they believed was a glamorisation of misogynist abuse.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Karcher |first=Katharina |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=G7-RDQAAQBAJ&pg=PA110 |title=Sisters in Arms: Militant Feminisms in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1968 |date=2017 |publisher=Berghahn Books |isbn=978-1-78533-535-8 |location=New York |language=en}}</ref>
===Scandal of the Hitler Diaries===
For {{lang|de|Stern}} very much more damaging publicity followed its serialisation, beginning in April 1983, of the so-called Hitler Diaries. Scientific examination soon proved that the "diaries", for which the magazine had paid 9.3 million {{lang|de|Deutsche Mark|italic=no}}, were forgeries. The resulting fiasco led to the resignation of the magazine's editors, a sit-in by staff to protest the "management's bypassing traditional editorial channels and safeguards",<ref>{{Cite news|last1=Cottrell|first1=Chris|last2=Kulish|first2=Nicholas|date=2013-04-23|title=30 Years Later, Forged Hitler Diaries Enter German Archives (Published 2013)|language=en-US|work=The New York Times|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/24/world/europe/forged-hitler-diaries-now-part-of-germanys-archives.html|access-date=2021-03-03|issn=0362-4331}}</ref> and a major press scandal that is still regarded as a low point in German journalism.<ref name="ser">{{cite journal|last1=Esser|first1=Frank|last2=Hartung|first2=Uwe|year=2004|title=Nazis, Pollution, and no Sex: Political Scandals as a Reflection of Political Culture in Germany|journal=American Behavioral Scientist|volume=47|issue=1040|pages=1040–1071|doi=10.1177/0002764203262277|s2cid=143578000}}</ref>
A publication "once known for its investigative reporting" became a byword for the folly and hazards of "sensation-seeking check book journalism".{{sfn|Esser|Hartung|2004|p=1063}} {{lang|de|Stern}}'s credibility was severely damaged and it took the magazine many years to regain its pre-scandal status and reputation.{{sfn|Esser|Hartung|2004|p=1063}}
===Trump: {{lang|de|Sein Kampf}}===
In its 24 August 2017 edition, {{lang|de|Stern}} demonstrated its continued ability and willingness to generate cover-page controversy (and to discard the restraints of {{lang|de|nutzwertiger Journalismus}}). A photo-shopped image depicted then-United States President Donald Trump draped in the American flag while giving a stiff-armed Nazi salute. "{{lang|de|Sein Kampf}}", read the headline, or "his struggle" – a reference to Adolf Hitler's autobiographical manifesto, {{lang|de|Mein Kampf}}. The sub-headline reads: "Neo Nazis, Ku Klux Klan, racism: How Donald Trump fuelled hatred in America".
The Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, while critical of President Trump's failure, in his remarks following the 12 August "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, to "make a distinction between Nazis and KKK protesters and those who opposed them", described "the depiction of the president as a latter-day Hitler by a major German publication" as "untrue and beyond the pale".<ref>{{Cite news |date=2017-08-25 |title=German magazine slammed for Trump "Nazi salute" cover |url=https://apnews.com/article/1507e71213b84a789a2b333afea09945 |access-date=2021-03-03 |publisher=Associated Press }}</ref> "Germans", they suggest, "must surely know that by misappropriating [...] Nazi symbols and terms associated with Adolf Hitler, they belittle and becloud the crimes of the past."<ref>{{Cite web |last=Onyanga-Omara |first=Jane |title=German magazine ''Stern'' criticized for 'Nazi' Trump cover |url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/08/25/german-magazine-stern-criticized-trump-cover/601364001/ |access-date=2021-03-03 |website=USA Today |language=en-US }}</ref> Jewish leaders in Germany similarly argued that the depiction of Trump as the new Hitler diminished ({{lang|de|verharmlost}}) Nazi genocide.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Wegen Hitlergruß: Stern verteidigt umstrittenes Cover mit Donald Trump|url=https://www.horizont.net/medien/nachrichten/Wegen-Hitlergruss-Stern-Cover-mit-Donald-Trump-sorgt-fuer-Empoerung-160558|access-date=2021-03-03|website=www.horizont.net|language=de}}</ref>
Stern responded: "The right-wing protesters in Charlottesville raised their arms in the Nazi salute, and the American president has not distanced himself from this gesture or from the mindset of the people. On the contrary, Donald Trump had seen in some of them 'fine people.' With this attitude, he identifies with the protesters and greets them in a transcendent sense – that is exactly what the {{lang|de|Stern}} cover visualises. It is, of course, far from us to want to minimise the atrocities of the National Socialists".<ref>{{Cite web|date=2017-08-25|title={{!}} Ad Age|url=https://adage.com/article/media/simon-wiesenthal-center-slams-stern-trump-hitler-cover/310243|access-date=2021-03-03|website=adage.com|language=en}}</ref>
Trump made several other {{lang|de|Stern}} covers. For the 19 January 2017 edition, he was seated on the Lincoln Memorial throne: "The Emperor, how Donald Trump is changing the world and why he is so dangerous for us". For the 10 September 2020 edition, he was in close up: "American Psycho, how Donald Trump is systematically destroying democracy".
===Diminishing sales and circulation=== Thanks in part, perhaps, to the 1992 closure of ''Quick'', at the turn of the century {{lang|de|Stern}} was still selling well over one million copies.<ref>{{Cite book |editor-last1=Anheier |editor-first1=Helmut K. |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=W0WV1yvMboEC&pg=PA460 |title=Cultures and Globalization: The Cultural Economy |editor-last2=Isar |editor-first2=Yudhishthir Raj |date=2008 |publisher=SAGE Publications |isbn=978-1-4462-0261-6 |location=Los Angeles |page=460}}</ref> Its print circulation fell to 896,000 copies in 2010<ref>{{cite web|title=World Magazine Trends 2010/2011|url=http://www.revistas-ari.com/attachments/209_WMT_2010_2011_Europe.pdf|work=FIPP|access-date=2 April 2015|archive-date=2 April 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150402165145/http://www.revistas-ari.com/attachments/209_WMT_2010_2011_Europe.pdf|url-status=dead}}</ref> and to 390,000 in 2020, 50,000 above the illustrated, more-celebrity-oriented weekly, {{lang|de|Bunte}}, but falling for the first time below that of {{lang|de|Der Spiegel}}.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|title=Stern: Verkaufte Auflage 2020|url=https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/36508/umfrage/verkaufte-auflage-des-stern-seit-1995/|access-date=2021-03-03|website=Statista|language=de}}</ref> By October 2023 at 313,200<ref name=":1">{{Cite web |title=Auflage Spiegel, Stern und Focus 2023 |url=https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/164386/umfrage/verkaufte-auflagen-von-spiegel-stern-und-focus/ |access-date=2023-12-02 |website=Statista |language=de}}</ref> sales had fallen below both rivals: ''Der Spiegel'' at 690,600<ref name=":1" /> and ''Bunte at'' 327,043.<ref>{{Cite web |title=BUNTE bei BCN The Brand Community Network |url=https://www.brand-community-network.de/marken/national/titel/bunte |access-date=2023-12-02 |website=BCN |language=de-DE}}</ref>
''Stern'' has had an on-line presence since 1995. The e-paper circulation of has almost tripled since 2015: from almost 8,500 copies in the second quarter of 2015 to around 26,800 in the fourth quarter of 2020. The significant decrease in the total circulation remains.<ref name=":0" /> Actual readership, however, is several times higher than copies sold or subscribed to online.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2019-01-23|title=''Stern'', ''Spiegel'', ''Focus'': Wie... |url=https://www.diepresse.com/5567208/stern-spiegel-focus-wie-viele-leser-die-zeitschriften-verlieren|access-date=2021-03-03|website=Die Presse|language=de}}</ref>
The fall in advertising sales has been commensurate with the fall in circulation: an advertising revenue of 218 million euros in 2003 had fallen to 107.3 million euros by 2020. It is a measure of the general decline of newsprint that in 2020 {{lang|de|Stern}} still took first place in the ranking of the popular magazines with the highest advertising sales.<ref name=":0" />
It is notable that a 2013 reformatting of the printed edition mimics on-line features and conventions. There is a greater use of sidebars and infographics. The language is less formal, and there is even greater emphasis on arresting large-print photography.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Mattioli |first=Martina |date=2019-01-21|title=Die Stern Zeitschrift |url=https://medium.com/@martinamattioli/die-stern-zeitschrift-a97be9a87157|access-date=2021-03-04 |website=Medium |language=en}}</ref>
