==Overview== thumb|left|A {{lang|no|smultring}} vendor in Norway
Smultringer are torus-shaped and sold from trucks and, at Christmas time, from stalls. They are described as being "thick, heavy dough fried in lard that are best eaten while hot and with the grease still dripping".<ref>{{Cite web|title=Saturday in the City: Market Square|url=https://mylittlenorway.com/2008/12/saturday-in-the-city-market-square/|access-date=2021-02-04|language=en-US}}</ref> {{lang|no|Smultringer}} are popular with expatriate Norwegians, including those in Minnesota who serve them with {{lang|no|krumkake}} and {{lang|no|riskrem}} (rice whipped cream), and {{lang|no|fattigmann}} at Christmas dinners.
{{lang|no|Hjortebakkels}} are made from rolls of dough looped with the ends overlapping. Brandy is often used as an ingredient. The Norwegian name comes from the fact that hartshorn was traditionally used as a raising agent.<ref>{{cite web|last=Walberg Larsen Evans|first=Helen|date=2 December 2010|title=Hjortebakkels (Norwegian Christmas Cake Doughnuts)|url=http://myreciperoundup.blogspot.com/2010/12/hjortebakkels-norwegian-christmas-cake.html|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=March 1, 2020|website=myreciperoundup}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|date=2007-11-08|title=Hjortebakkels|url=https://www.godt.no/oppskrift/5802/hjortebakkels|access-date=2021-02-04|website=godt.no|language=nb}}</ref>
