This species is native to western Mexico, including southern Zacatecas, northern Aguascalientes, and southern Nayarit, and south to western Jalisco and northwestern Colima. It inhabits the basins of the Ameca, Armeria, and Grande de Santiago rivers, between 350 and 2,400 meters elevation.<ref name="iucn status 15 November 2021"/>

Its natural habitats are temperate forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and rivers.

It is threatened by habitat loss.
