"'''Pporappippam'''" ({{Korean|hangul=보라빛 밤|rr=Borabit Bam|lit="Purple-hued Night"}}; stylized in all lowercase) is a song recorded by South Korean singer Sunmi, released on June 29, 2020, by Makeus Entertainment as a single. Sunmi wrote and co-produced the song with Frants.<ref>{{cite web|last=Khouri|first=Samar|url=https://gulfnews.com/entertainment/music/k-pop-stars-hwasa-and-sunmi-stage-powerful-comebacks-1.72424703|title=K-Pop stars Hwasa and Sunmi stage powerful comebacks|date=July 5, 2020|website=Gulf News|accessdate=July 9, 2020}}</ref> The music video was released on the same day.<ref>{{cite web|last=Yonhap|url=https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/art/2020/06/732_291550.html|title=High-profile female releases cap off H1 K-pop calendar|date=June 21, 2020|website=The Korea Times|accessdate=June 29, 2020}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last=Lim|first=Vivien|url=https://www.thestar.com.my/lifestyle/entertainment/2020/06/30/former-wonder-girls-member-sunmi-drops-comeback-single|title=Former Wonder Girls member Sunmi drops comeback single|date=June 30, 2020|website=The Star|accessdate=June 30, 2020}}</ref>
==Background== On May 21, 2020, it was revealed that Sunmi would be making a comeback in late June or early July.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Jung|first1=Ji-won|title=[단독]'믿고 듣는' 선미, 6월 신곡으로 10개월만 가요계 컴백|url=http://www.joynews24.com/view/1267009|accessdate=June 19, 2020|publisher=Joy News 24|date=May 21, 2020|language=ko}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last=Dong|first=Sun-hwa|url=https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/art/2020/06/732_291210.html|title=K-pop diva Sunmi signals June comeback|date=June 15, 2020|website=The Korea Times|accessdate=June 29, 2020}}</ref>
Sunmi revealed that she was originally working on another song but "because these days people feel down and heavy-hearted, [she] wanted to make something that could help them feel refreshed rather than something deep." The song title, which is a romanization of the Korean words for ''purple-hued night'', was chosen because "the violet-colored sky made her feel an undefinable sense of love and joy, but also because she thought that the color purple best described her."<ref>{{cite web|last=Yoon|first=So-yeon|url=https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2020/06/29/entertainment/kpop/Sunmi-pporappippam-LALALAY/20200629183100312.html|title=Sunmi proves that slow and steady wins the race|date=June 29, 2020|website=Korea JoongAng Daily|accessdate=June 29, 2020}}</ref>
==Composition== The song, which was co-composed by Sunmi and Frants, incorporates dance-pop and city pop sounds and features rhythmic beats and guitar riffs by singer-songwriter Jukjae. Sunmi mentioned during a press event that she "added the flute sound to the intro and hook" in order "to keep [her] own color." When describing the song, she said that "wanted to sonically express those feelings [which] gives you butterflies in your stomach [when] a breeze cools you down on a summer day at sunset after a hot day and you are looking up to the sky at a café terrace."<ref>{{cite web|last=Yim|first=Hyun-su|url=http://www01.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200629000851|title=Sunmi embraces girl power, praises Hwasa and Chung Ha|date=June 29, 2020|website=The Korea Herald|accessdate=June 29, 2020}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last=Lee|first=Seung-hun|url=https://channels.vlive.tv/C7A6F1/vtoday/1.15283145|title=Sunmi: "The point choreography of 'pporappippam' is the 'flirting dance'"|date=June 29, 2020|website=Osen|publisher=V Live|accessdate=June 29, 2020}}</ref>
''Rolling Stone India'' describes the song as "a fun Eighties-synth heavy pop track that falls neatly into the singer-songwriter's signature style that blends nostalgia with modern pop culture to a strangely haunting effect."<ref>{{cite magazine|last=Chakraborty|first=Riddhi|url=https://rollingstoneindia.com/5-new-korean-releases-you-need-to-have-on-your-radar-6/|title=5 New Korean Releases You Need To Have On Your Radar|date=July 1, 2020|magazine=Rolling Stone India|accessdate=July 10, 2020}}</ref>
==Music video== The music video was released on 1theK's and Sunmi's YouTube channels on June 29, 2020 at 5:30 PM (KST), thirty minutes prior to the single's release. It was directed by Ziyong Kim of FantazyLab, styled by stylist Kevin Germanier, and the choreography was completed by dancer Lee Yi-jung.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Kim|first1=Joon-seok|title=선미, 신곡 '보라빛 밤' 29일 온라인 쇼케이스 개최 "솔로퀸의 컴백"[공식]|url=https://sports.chosun.com/news/ntype.htm?id=202006300100275210019087&servicedate=20200629|accessdate=June 29, 2020|website=Sports Chosun|date=May 29, 2020|language=ko}}</ref>
Yonhap describes the music video as being "saturated in a purple hue filled with imagery of young partiers having a blast around a beach bonfire with fireworks, without the usual biting commentaries associated with Sunmi." Sunmi herself talks about the song as her "first true love song [since] her music largely carried cynicism or ridicule of love."<ref>{{cite web|last=Chang|first=Dong-woo|url=https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200629007800315|title=Sunmi goes hopelessly romantic in summer dance number 'Pporappippam'|date=June 29, 2020|website=Yonhap|accessdate=June 29, 2020}}</ref>
