==Species in taxonomic order== The birds called 'ibis' do not form a monophyletic group, as the spoonbills (''Platalea'') are embedded within them. There are 29 extant species of ibis (plus six species of spoonbills),<ref name=avilist/> and several extinct species of ibis, including one (Réunion ibis) that became extinct in historical times.
