The '''iPad Mini''' (stylized as iPad mini), known retrospectively as the '''iPad Mini 1''', is the first generation of the mini tablet computer developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It was announced on October 23, 2012, as the fourth major product in the iPad line and the first of the iPad Mini line. It features a reduced screen size of {{convert|7.9|in|cm}}, compared to the {{convert|9.7|in|cm|adj=on}} display on standard iPads at that time.
The first generation iPad Mini was succeeded by the iPad Mini 2.
==History== Before its official unveiling, the iPad Mini was the subject of months of speculation about its development and launch, with several photos of the possible product circulating online.<ref>{{Cite web |last=News |first=A. On September 16, 2015, Apple rolled out iOS 9 to the iPad Mini 1, but it does not have the new split-screen multitasking feature present in the other iPads due to hardware limitations of the A5 chip with 512 MB RAM. That feature let iPads run two apps side by side (iPad Air 2 and later, iPad mini 4 and later, all iPad Pros, and iPad (5th) generation and later). Additionally, the iPad mini (1st generation) does not support Slide Over (temporary app overlay — available on the iPad Air and later, iPad mini 2 and later, all iPad Pros, and iPad (5th generation) and later) or Picture in Picture (floating video — available on the iPad Air and later, iPad mini 2 and later, all iPad Pros, and iPad (5th generation) and later).
On June 13, 2016, Apple announced the iOS 10 update – with some major updates to the mobile operating system. However, the iPad Mini did not receive this update (along with other devices using the A5 processor including the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad (3rd generation), and iPod Touch (5th generation)<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.macrumors.com/2016/06/13/ios-10-compatible-iphone-ipad-ipod-list/|title=List of iOS 10 Compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch Models [Updated]|last=Rossignol|first=Joe|date=June 13, 2016|access-date=2016-06-15|archive-date=October 24, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201024160735/https://www.macrumors.com/2016/06/13/ios-10-compatible-iphone-ipad-ipod-list/|url-status=live}}</ref>) due to hardware limitations.
The industry expected Apple to discontinue iOS updates for the iPad Mini, but it has led to some criticism, as the device was sold until June 2015 and support was discontinued beyond iOS 9 by June 2016.<ref>{{Cite news |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/06/14/if-you-have-one-of-these-iphones-or-ipads-you-wont-get-ios-10/ |title=If you have one of these iPhones or iPads, you won't get iOS 10 |website=The Telegraph |date=June 14, 2016 |access-date=2016-06-15 |last1=Titcomb |first1=James |archive-date=October 27, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201027020146/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/06/14/if-you-have-one-of-these-iphones-or-ipads-you-wont-get-ios-10/ |url-status=live }}</ref>

All models can connect to a wireless LAN via Wi-Fi. The iPad Mini is available with 16, 32, 64 GB of internal flash memory, with no expansion option. Apple sells a "camera connection kit" with an SD card reader, but it can only be used to transfer photos and videos.
The iPad Mini features partially the same hardware as the iPad 2.
