'''Figshare''' is an online open access repository where researchers can preserve and share their research outputs, including figures, datasets, images, and videos.<ref name=grain>{{cite web|last=Hane|first=Paula|title=Sharing Research Data—New figshare For Institutions|url=http://www.against-the-grain.com/2013/09/sharing-research-data-new-figshare-for-institutions-2/|work=Against the Grain|date=17 September 2013 }}</ref> It is free to upload content and free to access, in adherence to the principle of open data. Figshare is one of a number of portfolio businesses supported by Digital Science,<ref name="nature" /> a subsidiary of Springer Nature.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Today|first=Information|date=2010-12-09|title=Macmillan Announces Release of Digital Science|url=http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/Digest/Macmillan-Announces-Release-of-Digital-Science-72655.asp|access-date=2022-02-04|website=newsbreaks.infotoday.com}}</ref>

==History== Figshare was launched in January 2011 by Mark Hahnel<ref name="plos">{{cite web|last=Fenner|first=Martin|title=Figshare: Interview with Mark Hahnel|url=http://blogs.plos.org/mfenner/2012/02/16/figshare-interview-with-mark-hahnel/|work=PLoS Blogs|access-date=19 June 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130725202330/http://blogs.plos.org/mfenner/2012/02/16/figshare-interview-with-mark-hahnel/|archive-date=25 July 2013}}</ref> and has been supported by Digital Science since a January 2012 relaunch.<ref name=nature>{{cite journal|last=Piwowar|first=Heather|title=Altmetrics: Value all research products.|journal=Nature |date=10 January 2013 |volume=493|issue=7431|page=159|doi=10.1038/493159a|pmid=23302843|bibcode=2013Natur.493..159P|s2cid=205075867 |doi-access=free|url=https://figshare.com/articles/journal_contribution/Altmetrics_Value_all_research_products/3206707/1/files/5033872.pdf}}</ref> Hahnel first developed the platform as a personal custom solution for the organization and publication of diverse research products generated in support of his PhD in stem cell biology.<ref name=nature /> In January 2013, Figshare announced a partnership with PLOS to integrate Figshare data hosting, access, and visualization with their associated PLOS articles.<ref name="cc">{{cite web|last=Kishor|first=Puneet|title=PLOS and figshare make open science publishing more open|url=https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/36504|work=Creative Commons|date=31 January 2013 |access-date=19 June 2013}}</ref> In September 2013, the service launched a hosted institutional repository service.<ref name=grain /> In December 2013, they announced integration with ImpactStory to support the collection of altmetrics.<ref>{{cite web|title=ImpactStory adds figshare integration|url=http://www.researchinformation.info/news/news_story.php?news_id=1443|work=Research Information|access-date=1 January 2014|date=3 December 2013|archive-date=2 January 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140102200219/http://www.researchinformation.info/news/news_story.php?news_id=1443}}</ref>

Figshare also hosts the Reproducibility Collection as a founding member of The Reproducibility Initiative, which acts as an independent and blinded validator for replication of submitted data.<ref name=animal>{{cite journal|last=Hooijmans|first=CR|author2=Ritskes-Hoitinga, M|title=Progress in Using Systematic Reviews of Animal Studies to Improve Translational Research|journal=PLOS Med|date=2013-07-16|volume=10|issue=7|article-number=e1001482|doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.1001482|pmid=23874162|pmc=3712909 |doi-access=free }}</ref>

Figshare releases 'The State of Open Data' each year to assess the changing academic landscape around open research.

==Concept== Researchers can upload all of their research outputs to Figshare, thus making them publicly available. Users can upload files in any format,<ref name="wellcome">{{cite web|last=Hahnel|first=Mark|title=Figshare: a new way to publish scientific research data|url=http://blog.wellcome.ac.uk/2012/01/18/figshare/|work=Wellcome Trust Blog|access-date=19 June 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140414110421/http://blog.wellcome.ac.uk/2012/01/18/figshare/|archive-date=14 April 2014}}</ref> and items are attributed a DOI. The current 'types' that can be chosen are figures, datasets, media (including video), papers (including pre-prints), posters, code, and filesets (groups of files).<ref name="faqs">{{cite web|title=FAQ|url=http://figshare.com/faqs#q8|work=figshare|access-date=21 June 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150416062118/http://figshare.com/faqs#q8|archive-date=16 April 2015}}</ref> All files are released under a Creative Commons license, CC-BY for most files and CC0 (public domain) for datasets.<ref name=grain /><ref>{{cite web|title=FAQ|url=http://figshare.com/faqs#q3|work=figshare|access-date=19 June 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150416062118/http://figshare.com/faqs#q3|archive-date=16 April 2015}}</ref> Figshare allows researchers to publish negative data.<ref name="plos" /><ref name="wellcome" /> The withholding of negative publications is a widely known phenomenon that leads to a significant bias, often referred to as the file drawer effect.<ref name=pharmacology>{{cite journal|last=Singh|first=Jatinder|title=FigShare|journal=Journal of Pharmacology & Pharmacotherapeutics|date=Apr–Jun 2011|volume=2|issue=2|pages=138–139|doi=10.4103/0976-500X.81919|pmid=21772785|pmc=3127351 |doi-access=free }}</ref> By encouraging publishing of figures, charts, and data, rather than being limited to the traditional entire 'paper', knowledge can be shared more quickly and effectively. Figshare also tracks the download statistics for hosted materials, acting in turn as a source for altmetrics.<ref name=nature /> The main hosting mechanism for the platform is Amazon S3, with CLOCKSS<ref>{{cite web|url=https://clockss.org/|title=CLOCKSS|website=clockss.org}}</ref> serving as an additional host for public content.<ref name=grain /> Both of these resources support backup and preservation via a distributed cloud computing network.

== Integration with other platforms == Figshare features integration with ORCID,<ref name="Figshare">{{cite web|url=http://figshare.com/blog/figshare_ORCID_integration/86|title=figshare ORCID integration|publisher=Figshare|access-date=7 May 2014}}</ref> Symplectic Elements,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://symplectic.co.uk/products/elements-3/|title=Elements|website=Symplectic|access-date=2019-05-09|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190509142532/https://symplectic.co.uk/products/elements-3/|archive-date=2019-05-09}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://figshare.com/blog/Figshare_and_Symplectic_Offer_New_Integration_to_Improve_Institutional_Workflows/352|title=Figshare and Symplectic Offer New Integration to Improve Institutional Workflows|last=Hyndman|first=Alan|date=6 December 2017|website=Figshare}}</ref> can import items from GitHub,<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://figshare.com/blog/figshare_launches_revamped_GitHub_integration/243|title=figshare launches revamped GitHub integration|last=Hyndman|first=Alan|date=17 July 2016|website=Figshare}}</ref> and is a source tracked by Altmetric.com.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.altmetric.com/press/press-releases/figshare-integrates-altmetric/|title=Over 2.5 million research outputs deposited on Figshare will now display Altmetric Badges, ushering in a new era of data level metrics|last=|first=|date=28 April 2016|website=Altmetric}}</ref>
