However, it can cause knee problems due to the circular rotation of the knee joint.<ref>{{cite journal | pmc = 2080536 | pmid=17589969 |doi= | volume=48 |issue= 3 |issn= 0353-9504 | title=Injuries in water polo | date=June 2007 | journal=Croat. == Applications == The eggbeater kick is used in several different types of swimming activities.

Water polo players use this style of kick so that their hands can be free to shoot, pass, dribble and control the ball. Water polo players need to perfect the eggbeater kick to have success. Goalkeepers must be able to do this especially as they need to have the power to get to the ball.<ref>{{cite web |last1=Nitzkowski |first1=Monte |title=The Swim Strokes and Water Polo: Chapter 2 |url=http://www.waterpoloplanet.com/HTML_Monte_pages2/mn02_Learning_the_Basics.html |website=Water Polo Planet: The Alternate Voice |access-date=18 January 2011 |format=Web |date=February 1998}}</ref>
Synchronized swimmers use this style of kick, so that they can perform other important skills that require stabilization. The eggbeater kick allows swimmers to lift teammates out of the water.
Lifeguards use this kick because it allows greater stabilization of the upper body.
== Technique == The eggbeater kick is an alternating breaststroke kick. The steps for eggbeater are the same as in breast stroke, except you are doing one leg at a time.
# Heel to butt, make sure you relax your foot on the way up # Turn your foot the outside of your body and flex # Kick out to the side # Point your foot and close
== Physics == The swimmer rotates their legs circularly while keeping their feet arched and angled, causing water above their foot to move faster than the water under their foot. This difference in pressure between the moving water and the surrounding water creates a force, propelling the swimmer.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Redondo |first1=Jose M. |title=Fundamental Hydrodinamics of Swimming Propulsion |journal=Revista Portuguesa de Ciencias do Desporto |via= Academia.edu. |date=27 January 2011 |doi= |url=https://upc.academia.edu/JoseMRedondo/Papers/330707/Fundamental_Hydrodinamics_of_Swimming_Propulsion |access-date= |publisher=Universitat Politecnica De Catalunya |format=Web |issn= |quote=}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last1=Alexander |first1=Marion |last2=Taylor |first2=Carolyn |title=Information and Education for Coaches – The Technique of the Eggbeater Kick |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110708171928/http://www.coachesinfo.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=231:waterpoloeggkick&catid=70:waterpologeneralarticles&Itemid=131 |website=www.coachesinfo.com |publisher=Coaches Info Service Website |access-date=18 January 2011 |format=Web |date=2005}}</ref> The faster the swimmer's feet move, the more propulsion he or she receives.<ref name= "Dante">{{cite web |last1=Dettamanti |first1=Dante |title=Dante's Water Polo Coaching Classes |url=http://www.waterpoloplanet.com/HTML_Dante_pages2/dd09_Dante_Coaching_Class.html |website=www.waterpoloplanet.com |publisher=Water Polo Planet |access-date=1 February 2011 |language= |format=Web |doi= |date=1 October 2010}}</ref>
