The '''chattering lory''' ('''''Lorius garrulus''''') is a forest-dwelling parrot endemic to North Maluku, Indonesia. It is considered vulnerable, the main threat being from trapping for the cage-bird trade.

The race ''L. g. flavopalliatus'' is known as the yellow-backed lory.

==Taxonomy== The chattering lory was formally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his ''Systema Naturae'' under the binomial name ''Psittacus garrulus''.<ref>{{cite book | last=Linnaeus | first=Carl | author-link=Carl Linnaeus | year=1758 | title= Systema Naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis | volume=1 | edition=10th | page=100 | publisher=Laurentii Salvii | location=Holmiae (Stockholm) | language=Latin | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/764492 }}</ref> The specific epithet ''garrulus'' is Latin and means "chattering", "babbling" or "noisy".<ref>{{cite book | last=Jobling | first=James A. | year=2010| title=The Helm Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names | publisher=Christopher Helm | location=London | isbn=978-1-4081-2501-4 | page=171 }}</ref> Linnaeus cited "The Scarlet Lory" that had been described and illustrated in 1751 by the English naturalist George Edwards in his book ''A Natural History of Uncommon Birds''. The specimen had been brought to London from the East Indies and Edwards was able to make a drawing of the live bird at the home of the Whig politician Robert Walpole.<ref>{{ cite book | last=Edwards | first=George | author-link=George Edwards (naturalist) | year=1751 | title=A Natural History of Uncommon Birds | location=London | publisher=Printed for the author at the College of Physicians | volume=Part IV | page=172 | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/50196410 }}</ref> Linnaeus designated the species locality as "Asia", but this is now taken to be the island of Halmahera in the Maluku Islands.<ref>{{ cite book | editor-last=Peters | editor-first=James Lee | editor-link=James L.
