== Description == This vigorous bamboo forms thickets up to {{convert|6|m|ft|abbr=on}} tall with shiny leaves up to {{convert|25 |cm|in|abbr=on}} long.<ref name="RHSPF" /> The culms are typically yellow-brown and it has palm-like leaves. The common name "arrow bamboo" results from the Japanese samurai using its hard and stiff canes for their arrows.<ref name="CMB">{{cite web | url= http://www.capemaybamboo.com/JAPANESE-ARROW-BAMBOO.html| title= Cape May Bamboo - ''Pseudosasa Japonica'' (Japanese Arrow Bamboo)| access-date= 2012-03-11}}</ref> It grows up to {{cvt|4|cm}} a day.{{cn|date=November 2022}}
==Cultivation== This cold hardy bamboo species (tolerant to 0 °F/−17.7 °C) grows well both in shade and full sun. ''Pseudosasa japonica'' does very well in containers and salty air near the ocean. Because it tends to be more shade tolerant than other bamboo species it is often used by gardeners as an understory to a tree-lined living fence.<ref name=CMB/> In cultivation in the UK this species has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.<ref name = RHSPF>{{cite web | url = https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/14080/i-Pseudosasa-japonica-i/Details | title = RHS Plantfinder - ''Pseudosasa japonica'' | access-date = 23 September 2018}}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url = https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/pdfs/agm-lists/agm-ornamentals.pdf | title = AGM Plants - Ornamental | date = July 2017 | page = 82 | publisher = Royal Horticultural Society | access-date = 23 September 2018}}</ref>
