On 7 October 2014, to facilitate the governance of Luhansk Oblast, the Verkhovna Rada made some changes in the administrative divisions, so that the localities in the government-controlled areas were grouped into districts. Among other changes, Zolote was transferred from Pervomaisk Municipality to Popasna Raion.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Про зміни в адміністративно-територіальному устрої Луганської області, зміну і встановлення меж Перевальського і Попаснянського районів Луганської області |url=https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/go/1693-18 |access-date=2023-12-15 |website=Офіційний вебпортал парламенту України |language=uk}}</ref>
Zolote came under the ''de facto'' control of the Luhansk People's Republic on 23 June 2022. It was claimed that around 2,000 Ukrainian troops were surrounded in the town before its capture during the battle of Donbas.<ref>{{Cite web |date=24 June 2022 |title=Ukraine loses key district south lysychansk russian forces official 2022-06-24 |url=https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-loses-key-district-south-lysychansk-russian-forces-official-2022-06-24/ |access-date=24 June 2022 |website=Reuters}}</ref>
