In 1853, Xianfeng Emperor approached Zeng to suppress the Nian Rebellion in Shandong, appointing him as the commander of the Dengzhou Town garrison.<ref name="jingli7">《清實錄咸丰朝實錄》 清代咸丰年间，卷二百四十八</ref> By 1861, he was able to suppress the local rebels<ref name="LFXZ1">{{Harvard citation no brackets|《陆丰县志》|2007|loc=第二十六篇(文物)：第四章(摩崖石刻 碑记 匾额)：第三节(匾额)}}</ref> and in the same year, applied for resignation in favor of taking care of his family.<ref name="jingli78">《清實錄同治朝實錄》 清代同治年间，卷十二</ref> But his resignation was not granted and he had to remain in the garrison.<ref name="jingli79">《清實錄同治朝實錄》 清代同治年间，卷六十七</ref>
In 1863 Zeng was once again summoned by the Imperial Army in Zichuan District, Shandong and successfully suppressed the rebels in the area. For his suppression efforts, he was bestowed the peacock plume in June.<ref name="shangHL"/> He went back to his hometown and died of old age in home.<ref name="LFXZ2"/>
