Following the Yadana project, the US$700 million Yetagun ("Flag of victory") project was the second natural gas offshore project in Myanmar.<ref name="Chin2005-p265"/><ref name="South2003">{{cite book|author=Ashley South|title=Mon nationalism and civil war in Burma: the golden sheldrake|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=LyAnLrVk_MAC&pg=PA200|access-date=3 March 2012|year=2003|publisher=Psychology Press|isbn=978-0-7007-1609-8|page=200}}</ref>
==Description== The Yetagun gas field contained a reserve estimated at {{convert|3.2|e12cuft|abbr=off}}.<ref name="Chin2005-p265"/> In 2000, the production started at {{convert|200|e6cuft/d|abbr=off}} and could go up to {{convert|300|e6cuft/d|abbr=off}}.<ref name="Chin2005-p265"/> It travels through a {{convert|169|mi|adj=on}}, {{convert|24|in|adj=on}} diameter pipeline to Thailand.<ref name="Chin2005-p265"/> About {{convert|140|mi}} of the pipelines is undersea, and the rest of it is onshore, where it links with the Yadana pipeline.<ref name="DevareStudies2008">{{cite book|author1=Sudhir Devare|author2=Institute of Southeast Asian Studies|title=A new energy frontier: the Bay of Bengal region|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wOMxJdZl7jMC&pg=PA48|access-date=3 March 2012|date=31 December 2008|publisher=Institute of Southeast Asian Studies|isbn=978-981-230-781-1|page=48}}</ref> Also, Yetagun could produce eight to nine thousand barrels of gas condensate per day.<ref name="Chin2005-p265"/>
==History== The Yetagun gas field was a joint venture between Texaco (50%), Premier Oil (30%), and Nippon Oil (20%).<ref name="DevareStudies2008"/> After Texaco withdrew in 1997 and Premier Oil withdrew in 2002, Petronas became the operator.<ref name="DevareStudies2008"/>
In 2008, the Yetagun gas pipeline had a problem with leaking, causing a loss of 400-500 million cubic feet per day (cfd) to Thailand.<ref name=reuters2408>{{cite news |title= Myanmar's Yetagun gas pipeline leaking - PTTEP |url=http://uk.reuters.com/article/myanmar-gas-idUKBKK6947520080402 |newspaper=Reuters |date=2 April 2008 |access-date=3 March 2012}}{{dead link|date=September 2024|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}}</ref>
In 2011, a helicopter hired by Petronas to work at Yetagun crashed in the Andaman Sea, killing 3 people while 11 people survived.<ref name=irrawaddy11711>{{cite news |title= 3 Killed in Yetagun Copter Crash|url= http://www.irrawaddy.org/article.php?art_id=21670 |newspaper=The Irrawaddy |date=11 July 2011|access-date=3 March 2012}}</ref>
==Controversy== Some controversy exists regarding the Yetagun (and Yadana) pipeline since some of the profits go to the Burmese government which has a poor human rights record.<ref name="Bendell2000">{{cite book|author=Jem Bendell|title=Terms for endearment: business, NGOs and sustainable development|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=mFrMthSwmcIC&pg=PA59|access-date=3 March 2012|date=1 December 2000|publisher=Greenleaf Publishing|isbn=978-1-874719-29-8|page=59}}</ref> Also, the main export pipeline runs through an area associated with the Mon and Karen ethnic minorities.<ref name="Bendell2000"/> There have also been reports of forced labor to build a railway to the pipeline terminus.<ref name="Bendell2000"/> Furthermore, some are concerned about the environmental impact the pipelines will have on forests.<ref name="Bendell2000"/><ref>Bogumil Terminski, (2012), Oil-Induced Displacement and Resettlement. Social Propblem and Human Rights Issue, Working Paper, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver.</ref>
Though Texaco sold its shares for ostensibly commercial reasons, some believe that the US government’s sanctions on investments in Burma contributed to their withdrawal.<ref name="Bendell2000"/> Similarly in 2002, when Premier withdrew, activists claimed victory in a 10-year-long campaign against the company’s activity, whereas Premier insisted it pulled out due to commercial interests.<ref name=bbc16902>{{cite news |title=Protest-hit oil firm bows out of Burma |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/2261781.stm |newspaper=BBC News |date=16 September 2002 |access-date=3 March 2012}}</ref>
