'''Yanteles''' is an isolated stratovolcano composed of five glacier-capped peaks along an 8 km-long NE-trending ridge. It is located approximately {{Convert|30|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} south of the Corcovado volcano in the Chilean X Region (de Los Lagos) within the Corcovado National Park. The name Yanteles can refer only to the main summit, which is also known as '''Volcán Nevado''' (Spanish for "Snow-covered Volcano").
== Geography and geology ==
The volcano lies in the Chaitén municipality, Palena region, Los Lagos Region of Chile. Villa Santa Lucía and Bahía Tic-Toc are the closest settlements to the volcano,{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} while Chaitén is {{convert|60|km}} away.{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=General Information}} The elongated edifice is {{convert|2042|m}},{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=Photo Gallery}} {{convert|1790|m}}{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=General Information}} or {{convert|1971|m}} high and covers an area of {{convert|84.5|km2}}, making it a large volcano. Three stratovolcanoes developed on a north-south trending fault{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} and five peaks form a ridge trending northeastward.{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=Photo Gallery}} Volcanoes like Yanteles form the highest summits of the Andes at these latitudes.{{sfn|A.|Guido M.|Lucía|C.|2019|p=613}} It also features a caldera with a pyroclastic cone.{{sfn|Corbella|Lara|2008|p=101}} Eroded peaks occur in the vicinity{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=General information}} and Nevado and Yeli are volcanic necks associated with the system.{{sfn|Corbella|Lara|2008|p=101}} Another major fault in the region is the Melimoyu-Yanteles Fault.{{sfn|Hauser|1989|p=234}}
It is covered by sizeable glaciers,{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} which with an area of {{convert|46.24|km2}} ({{as of|2007}}) form one of the largest areas of ice in the region. It has been declining at a rate of {{convert|0.72|km2/year|mi2/year}}.{{sfn|Rivera|Bown|2013|p=252}}
Yanteles has erupted basaltic andesite.{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} The volcano is geologically part of the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes.{{sfn|Fagel|Alvarez|Namur|Devidal|2017|p=1227}}
== History and hazards ==
The volcano was active in the Pleistocene-Holocene and the last major eruption was 6,650 BCE.{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} The volcano is considered to be a source of tephra layers{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=General Information}} such as the 7,240±150 BCE eruption that produced the YAN1 tephra.{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=Eruptive History}}Another eruption took place 10,340±180 years before present.{{sfn|Vanderstraeten|Mattielli|Laruelle|Gili|2023|p=15}} One tephra in the Siple Dome of Antarctica{{sfn|Kurbatov|Zielinski|Dunbar|Mayewski|2006|p=9}} and tephras found in Patagonian lakes may come from Yanteles.{{sfn|Fagel|Alvarez|Namur|Devidal|2017|p=1227}}
Yanteles is little known,{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=General Information}} but attested in a 1899 publication{{sfn|Delachaux|1899|loc=Figure between p.48-p.49}} and was known to be a volcano as far back as 1916.{{sfn|González Acha de Correa Morales|1916|p=126}} The occurrence of historical eruptions is uncertain;{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=Photo Gallery}} Yanteles reportedly{{sfn|Manga|Brodsky|2006|p=264}} erupted a day after the 1835 Concepcion earthquake and activity continued for months,{{sfn|Mora-Stock|Thorwart|Wunderlich|Bredemeyer|2014|p=2016}} but little is known about this activity{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=General Information}} and its description as patches of bare rock or the disappearance of snow makes the record doubtful;{{sfn|Watt|Pyle|Mather|2009|p=402}} such a change could constitute landsliding instead.{{sfn|Lara|Orozco|Piña-Gauthier|2012|p=109}} Later activity is limited to fumarolic activity in 1982, 1992 and 1993-1995.{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} Two fumarolic areas were reported in 1993 on the ridge, {{convert|2|km}} from each other, and were emitting yellow-to-white steam.{{sfn|GVP|2022|loc=Bulletin Reports}}
Future eruptions could cause mudflows in the valleys around the volcano.{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|loc=1}} It was classified as a type III volcano by SERNAGEOMIN, implying an intermediate volcanic hazard.{{sfn|SERNAGEOMIN|2020|loc=1}}
