He was known for his physical strength, and played mostly as a centre-back although he could occasionally play as left-back.<ref name="EURO">{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/euro2000/teams/holland/squad/742251.stm|title=Winston Bogarde|publisher=BBC|access-date=25 September 2009}}</ref>

He had spells at Ajax, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/bogarde-granada-barcelona-5131840|title=¿Qué hacía Bogarde en el Granada-Barça?|trans-title=What was Bogarde doing in Granada-Barça?|newspaper=Sport|language=es|date=14 May 2016|access-date=7 December 2017}}</ref> With the latter club he garnered worldwide attention when he received little playing time (no Premier League level appearances in his last three seasons combined), and nevertheless insisted on seeing out his lucrative contract.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.uefa.com/news/newsId=136301,printer.htmx|title=No way out for Bogarde|publisher=UEFA|date=8 January 2004|access-date=21 July 2009|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050416045821/http://www.uefa.com/news/newsId=136301,printer.htmx|archive-date=16 April 2005}}</ref>

Bogarde represented the Netherlands national team in one World Cup and one European Championship, being an international for five years.

==Club career== ===Early years and Ajax=== Born in Rotterdam, Bogarde started his career at SVV in the Eerste Divisie, as a winger,<ref name="EURO"/> then switched to the Eredivisie in summer 1991, playing with hometown club Sparta (he previously had a short loan spell with neighbouring Excelsior in the second division) and scoring a career-best 11 goals in the 1993–94 season as it qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Bogarde signed for Ajax in 1994. After a slow first year – he did not leave the bench in the final of the team's victorious campaign in the UEFA Champions League<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/0131-0ea969a88ada-9aa85bac6453-1000--kluivert-strikes-as-ajax-force-changing-of-the-guard/|title=Kluivert strikes as Ajax force changing of the guard|publisher=UEFA|date=24 May 1995|access-date=19 October 2017}}</ref> – he became a defensive stalwart.

===Milan and Barcelona=== AC Milan signed Bogarde from Ajax for the 1997–98 season, but he only made three Serie A appearances throughout his short stay. In January 1998, he moved to compatriot Louis van Gaal's Barcelona, playing 19 matches in the second part of the campaign as Barcelona won a domestic double of La Liga and the Copa del Rey.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.sport.es/es/noticias/copa-del-rey/copa-hesp-del-doblete-van-gaal-3241791|title=La Copa de Hesp y del doblete de Van Gaal|trans-title=The Cup of Hesp and Van Gaal's double|newspaper=Sport|last=Soria|first=Miki|language=es|date=4 April 2014|access-date=19 October 2015}}</ref>

As the Dutch influence at Barcelona was reduced, so was Bogarde's, who only managed one league contest in his first full season, partly due to injuries,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.spherasports.com/cuatro-holandeses-que-fracasaron-en-el-barcelona-113142/|title=Cuatro holandeses que fracasaron en el Barcelona|trans-title=Four Dutchmen who failed at Barcelona|publisher=Sphera Sports|language=es|date=20 December 2016|access-date=19 October 2017|archive-date=19 October 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171019215935/http://www.spherasports.com/cuatro-holandeses-que-fracasaron-en-el-barcelona-113142/|url-status=dead}}</ref> although he bounced back for a second respectable one (21 games, two goals).<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/malagacf/2016/11/17/vicente-valcarce-rememora-hazana-1/890292.html|title=Valcarce rememora la hazaña del Málaga CF del 1–2 en el Camp Nou 17 años después|trans-title=Valcarce remembers Málaga CF's 1–2 exploit at the Camp Nou 17 years later|newspaper=La Opinión de Málaga|last=Criado|first=José|language=es|date=21 November 2016|access-date=19 October 2017}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=https://elpais.com/diario/2000/04/03/deportes/954712808_850215.html|title=El Barça acaba con la leyenda del Piojo|trans-title=Barça finish legend of the Louse|newspaper=El País|last=Besa|first=Ramón|language=es|date=3 April 2000|access-date=19 October 2017}}</ref>

===Chelsea=== Bogarde signed for Chelsea for the 2000–01 season, after following the advice of compatriot Mario Melchiot to join him at the Premier League side.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/4770298/Vialli-signs-Bogarde.html|title=Vialli signs Bogarde|newspaper=The Daily Telegraph|last=Johnson|first=William|date=1 September 2000|access-date=12 December 2010}}</ref> He was signed when Gianluca Vialli was manager, although the latter had no idea the transfer was happening, it arguably being conducted by director of football Colin Hutchinson, with Emerson Thome, also a centre-back, shipped off to Sunderland;<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2000/sep/01/newsstory.sport|title=Vialli ups the stakes with Bogarde|newspaper=The Guardian|last=Thomas|first=Russell|date=1 September 2000|access-date=3 January 2018}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/2188244/bogarde-move-still-in-pipeline|title=Bogarde move still in pipeline|work=Sky Sports|last=Marshall|first=Adam|date=2000|access-date=3 January 2018}}</ref> only weeks after arriving, newly appointed manager Claudio Ranieri wanted the player to leave.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://soccerlens.com/premier-leagues-biggest-transfer-flops/3587/|title=Premier League's biggest transfer flops|work=Soccer Lens|last=Hanif|first=Tahira|date=15 October 2007|access-date=20 July 2009|archive-date=25 September 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120925082316/http://soccerlens.com/premier-leagues-biggest-transfer-flops/3587/|url-status=dead}}</ref>

According to Bogarde, it would be next to impossible to find a team that would offer him a contract comparable to the one he had at Chelsea: he was astounded at the salary the club had agreed on, as his value depreciated severely due to lack of first-team action, and decided to stay and honour his contract to the letter and appear for training every day, despite being only rarely selected to play.<ref>{{Cite book|title=Deze neger buigt voor niemand|trans-title=This negro bows for no one|last=Bogarde|first=Winston}}</ref> In the end, he only appeared 12 times during his four-year tenure, reportedly earning £40,000 a week during this period.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=352047&root=europe&cc=5901|title=Money for nothing|work=ESPN Soccernet|last=Bouwes|first=Ernst|date=12 December 2005|access-date=20 July 2009|archive-date=4 February 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120204145257/http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=352047&root=europe&cc=5901|url-status=dead}}</ref><ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/the-worst-transfer-deals-in-premier-league-history-1706591.html?action=gallery&ino=10|title=The worst transfer deals in Premier League history|newspaper=The Independent|last=Rice|first=Simon|date=25 August 2010|access-date=12 December 2014}}</ref>

After playing as a substitute against Ipswich Town on Boxing Day 2000,<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/1086279.stm|title=Ipswich fightback thwarts Chelsea|work=BBC Sport|date=26 December 2000|access-date=12 March 2010}}</ref> Bogarde only played one more competitive match before his contract expired in July 2004, featuring from the bench, against Gillingham in the League Cup on 6 November 2002.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/2390945.stm|title=Cole ends Gills hopes|work=BBC Sport|date=6 November 2002|access-date=12 March 2010}}</ref>

During his spell at Stamford Bridge, the club attempted to sell Bogarde due to his large salary, and demoted him to the reserve and youth teams in an effort to pressure him to leave.<ref>{{Cite web |date=21 May 2006 |title=Money for nothing, the history of Winston Bogarde |url=http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=125370.0;wap |access-date=21 July 2009 |publisher=Red and White Kop}}</ref> In response to concurrent UK press criticism, he said:

{{Blockquote|text=Why should I throw fifteen million euro away when it is already mine? At the moment I signed it was in fact my money, my contract. Both sides agreed wholeheartedly. I could go elsewhere to play for less, but you have to understand my history to understand I would never do that. I used to be poor as a kid, did not have anything to spend or something to play with. This world is about money, so when you are offered those millions you take them. Few people will ever earn so many. I am one of the few fortunates who do. I may be one of the worst buys in the history of the Premiership, but I don't care.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=125370.0;wap|title=Money for nothing, the history of Winston Bogarde|publisher=Red and White Kop|date=21 May 2006|access-date=21 July 2009}}</ref>}}

Bogarde had the chance to feature in his first start at a World Cup match against Brazil in the semi-finals, after starter Numan was suspended in the previous encounter against Argentina, but he sustained a serious shin injury during training and was hospitalised,<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/world/events/1998/worldcup/news/1998/07/05/bogarde_injury/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20000915083308/http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/world/events/1998/worldcup/news/1998/07/05/bogarde_injury/|url-status=dead|archive-date=15 September 2000|title=Bogarde out with fractured shin|publisher=Sports Illustrated|date=5 July 1998|access-date=20 July 2009}}</ref> being replaced by Philip Cocu.
