Sowood was born in [[Norfolk]]. He was educated at [[Corpus Christi College, Cambridge]], graduating [[Bachelor of Arts|B.A.]] in 1508; [[Master of Arts (Oxbridge and Dublin)|MA]] in 1511; and [[Bachelor of Divinity|B.D.]] in 1523.
