==Early life== William Murray Tuke was born in 1822, the son of Samuel Tuke<ref>{{cite DNB|wstitle= Tuke, Samuel (1784-1857) |volume= 57 |last= Urquhart |first= A.R. |author-link= |pages= 301-302 |year= |short=1}}</ref> and Priscilla Hack, the daughter of James Hack of Chichester, and his wife, Hannah Jeffreys.
==Career== Tuke was a tea merchant and a banker. He had a "substantial tea business in York".<ref name=Barclays>{{cite web|title=William Tuke (Chairman 1934-1936)|url=https://www.archive.barclays.com/items/show/19493|website=Barclays|accessdate=7 August 2015}}</ref> Tuke founded a bank in Essex, Gibson, Tuke & Gibson.
