He was involved in several societies such as the Chetham Society as Council Member (from 1953), unofficial joint Editor with J. S. Roskell (1962–87), and Treasurer (1983–4).<ref>{{Cite web|title=Chetham Society:Past Officers|url=https://www.chethamsociety.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/CS_Officers_Council_1843-2013.pdf|access-date=11 March 2021|website=Chetham Society}}</ref> He was also involved in the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society as Council Member (from 1951) and Editor (1954–86).<ref>{{Cite journal|title=William Henry Chaloner|journal=Transactions of Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society|volume=85|pages=1–105}}</ref> Chaloner was also a Governor of the Hulme Grammar School in Oldham.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Oldham Hulme Grammar School|url=https://www.ohgs.co.uk/ArchiveWebPages/speechday/sdpb1984.pdf|access-date=11 March 2021|website=Oldham Hulme Grammar School}}</ref> He died in 1987 aged 73.
