He served with distinction in the First World War after which he became the General Secretary of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Canada.<ref>"Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}}</ref> Following ordination he was Rector of Tisdale and then Rural Dean of Melfort.
