'''Waeng''' ({{langx|th|แว้ง}}, {{IPA|th|wɛ́ːŋ|pron}}) is the southernmost district (''amphoe'') of Narathiwat province, southern Thailand.

==History== The district dates back to the Tomo District (โต๊ะโมะ), which was a subordinate of ''Mueang'' Ra-ngae. The village grew bigger because of the gold mining there. In 1935 a minor district (''king amphoe'') covering the central part of Tomo was established and named Pacho (ปาโจ).<ref>{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=52|issue=ง|pages=2501|script-title=th:ประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย เรื่อง ตั้งกิ่งอำเภอปาโจ|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2478/D/2501.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120127112527/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2478/D/2501.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=January 27, 2012|date=November 17, 1935|language=Thai}}</ref> In 1939 the minor district received the name "Tomo" because it contained the sub-district named "Tomo", and the parent district was renamed "Waeng".<ref>{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=56|issue=ก|pages=354–364|script-title=th:พระราชกฤษฎีกาเปลี่ยนนามอำเภอ กิ่งอำเภอ และตำบลบางแห่ง พุทธศักราช ๒๔๘๒|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2482/A/354.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090219071714/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2482/A/354.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=February 19, 2009|date=April 17, 1939|language=Thai}}</ref> In 1953 the minor district Tomo was abolished and included in Waeng again.<ref>{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=70|issue=56 ง|pages=3062|script-title=th:ประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย เรื่อง ยุบกิ่งอำเภอโต๊ะโมะ อำเภอแว้ง จังหวัดนราธิวาส|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2496/D/056/3062.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120127105758/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2496/D/056/3062.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=January 27, 2012|date=September 1, 1953|language=Thai}}</ref> In 1957 the Sub-district Tomo was also abolished and included in Sub-district Samong,<ref>{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=74|issue=25 ง|pages=679|script-title=th:ประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย เรื่อง ยุบและเปลี่ยนแปลงเขตตำบลในท้องที่อำเภอแว้ง จังหวัดนราธิวาส|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2500/D/025/679.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120524102849/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2500/D/025/679.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=May 24, 2012|date=March 12, 1957|language=Thai}}</ref> which then formed part of area split off as minor district Sukhirin in 1977.
