Born in Christchurch, Doak was educated at Christchurch Boys' High School from 1954 to 1958.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://cbhs.sslsecurelink.com/userfiles/Old_Boys_Newsletter_August.pdf |title=Queen's birthday honours 2012 |work=Newsletter |date=July 2012 |publisher=Christchurch Boys' High School Old Boys' Association |page=7 |accessdate=3 October 2019}}</ref> He began diving in his teens, and met Kelly Tarlton at the Canterbury Underwater Club.<ref name="NZOnScreen">{{cite web |url=https://www.nzonscreen.com/profile/wade-doak/biography |title=Wade Doak |website=NZOnScreen |year=2019 |accessdate=18 September 2019}}</ref> In the 1960s, Doak moved to Northland, where he first dove around the Poor Knights Islands with Tarlton.<ref name="NZOnScreen"/> Doak became an acknowledged expert on the marine ecology of the area, and was instrumental in the Poor Knights Islands being made a marine reserve in 1981 and receiving full protection in 1998.<ref name="NZOnScreen"/>
