The '''CST Award for Best Artist-Technician''' ({{langx|fr|PRIX CST de l’Artiste Technicien}}) is an independent film award created in 2003. It rewards the work of a technician for his or her collaboration in the creation of a film from the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival.<ref name=prix_def>{{cite web|work=Récompenses de l'excellence|title=Prix de l'artiste technicien – Prix VULCAIN|url=http://www.cst.fr/la-cst/recompenses-de-lexcellence/|publisher=CST|access-date=21 November 2014|archive-date=29 November 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141129040805/http://www.cst.fr/la-cst/recompenses-de-lexcellence/|url-status=dead}}</ref> It is awarded by a special jury, appointed by the ''Superior Technical Commission of Image and Sound'' ({{langx|fr|Commission Supérieure Technique de l’Image et du Son}} or CST).{{Citation needed|date=August 2022}}
==History== In 1951, the CST created the ''Technical Grand Prize'' ({{langx|fr|Grand Prix Technique}}) of the CST, awarded during the Cannes Film Festival. That prize existed until 2000.{{Citation needed|date=August 2022}}
In 2003, Pierre-William Glenn, president of the CST, struggled to once again have a prize awarded to a technician during the Cannes Film Festival. Thus, the ''Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist'' was born as a part of the festival roster and approved by the festival's president Gilles Jacob.<ref name="prix_hist">{{cite web|work=Récompenses de l'excellence|title=Un peu d'histoire|url=http://www.cst.fr/la-cst/recompenses-de-lexcellence/|publisher=CST|access-date=21 November 2014|archive-date=29 November 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141129040805/http://www.cst.fr/la-cst/recompenses-de-lexcellence/|url-status=dead}}</ref>
In 2019, it was renamed the « CST Award for Best Artist-Technician ».
Since 2021, the CST has also been awarding the CST Award for Best Young Female Film Technician, to highlight a young female head of station in French cinema.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Klimberg |first=Par Nathalie |date=2021-06-17 |title=Mediakwest - Un Prix CST de la Jeune Technicienne à Cannes ! |url=https://mediakwest.com/egalite-cst-prix-jeune-technicienne-cannes/ |access-date=2022-09-14 |website=Mediakwest |language=fr-FR}}</ref>
==The trophy== The actual trophy is awarded to the winner in Paris, during a special evening following the festival.<ref name=prix_hist />
It is inspired by an image from Jean-Luc Godard's movie ''Le Mépris'' (''Contempt'') (1963) and represents a movie camera with analog and numeric elements.<ref name="prix_award">{{cite web|work=Récompenses de l'excellence|title=Le Trophée du Prix Vulcain de l'Artiste Technicien|url=http://www.cst.fr/la-cst/recompenses-de-lexcellence/|publisher=CST|access-date=21 November 2014|archive-date=29 November 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141129040805/http://www.cst.fr/la-cst/recompenses-de-lexcellence/|url-status=dead}}</ref>
