The state's official list of important historic sites, it was created in 1965,<ref name="auto">{{Cite web |title=Historic Registers |url=https://www.dhr.virginia.gov/programs/historic-registers/ |access-date=2024-05-31 |website=DHR |language=en-US}}</ref> by the General Assembly in the Code of Virginia.<ref name="auto"/> The Register serves the same purpose as the National Register of Historic Places.
