Located 3 degrees north north east of [[Epsilon Centauri]], It ranges from [[apparent magnitude]] 5.1 to 6.7 over 90 days.<ref name=Simpson2012/> It is unusual in that it is a red star with a high proper motion (greater than 50 milliarcseconds a year).<ref name=" Jiménez-Esteban"/> When it is near its maximum brightness, it is visible to the [[naked eye]] under good observing conditions.
In 1964, [[Wolfgang Strohmeier]] ''et al.'' announced the discovery that the star is a [[variable star]].<ref name="Strohmeier1964"/> It was given its [[variable star designation]], V744 Centauri, in 1968.<ref name="Kukarkin1968"/>
