He said that president Trump does not support membership of NATO for Ukraine in a peace agreement, and expects Europe to provide more financial and military assistance for Ukraine, while the US concentrates on its own security and the challenge of China; no US troops will be deployed to Ukraine.<ref name=nyt-20250212>{{cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/world/europe/ukraine-war-hegseth-nato.html |title=Hegseth Says Return to Ukraine's Prewar Borders Is 'Unrealistic' |last=Erlanger |first=Steven |website=The New York Times|location=Berlin|url-access=subscription |date=12 February 2025 |access-date=12 February 2025 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://archive.today/20250212151840/https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/world/europe/ukraine-war-hegseth-nato.html |archive-date=12 February 2025}}</ref>
