It is located about a mile and a half north of Newport Pagnell.
The village name is an Old English language word, and means 'Tir's home'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was recorded as ''Telingham''.
There is a theory that the name Tyringham refers to a settlement of Thuringii Germans coming with the Anglo-Saxons in the Dark Ages.<ref>H. F. Nielsen, ''The Germanic Languages: Origins and Early Dialectal Interrelations'' (Tuscaloosa, 1989), p. 62 [Tyringham, Buckinghamshire, and related names may reflect settlements of Thuringians].</ref>
==Civil parish== Historically, the parish of 'Tyringham with Filgrave' (or 'Tyringham cum Filgrave') was first created in 1639 by the union of two parishes.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10011462|title=Relationships and changes Tyringham With Filgrave CP/AP through time|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=27 August 2022}}</ref><ref>Youngs. The modern civil parish is '''Tyringham and Filgrave''', consisting of these two villages and their surrounding area.<ref>[http://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/parishes/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=17026 Parishes in Milton Keynes] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090608003948/http://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/parishes/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=17026 |date=2009-06-08 }} - Milton Keynes Council.</ref> At the 2021 census, the population of the parish was 225.<ref name="Census 2021" /> Historically, Tyringham on its own once contained only two houses, but was deemed a village in its own right because it had an ecclesiastic parish.{{cn|date=April 2026}}
