==History==
Trudeau Institute is named for tuberculosis researcher Edward Livingston Trudeau, who founded the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium in 1884 in Saranac Lake, New York, to serve as a tuberculosis treatment and research facility.<ref name="Baldwin">{{cite journal |last1=Baldwin |first1=Edward R. |title=Saranac Lake and the Saranac Laboratory for the Study of Tuberculosis |journal=The Milbank Memorial Fund Quarterly Bulletin |date=1932 |volume=10 |issue=1 |pages=1–16 |doi=10.2307/3347491 |jstor=3347491 |url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/3347491 |access-date=15 October 2024 |issn=0276-5187|url-access=subscription }}</ref> Trudeau, who had himself survived a tuberculosis infection during a stay at Paul Smith's Hotel in the Adirondacks, believed that the clean air in the region would improve health outcomes. Several other cure cottages opened in the town after the sanitarium.<ref name="Rowland" /> In 1894, after a fire destroyed his small laboratory, Trudeau built the Saranac Laboratory for the Study of Tuberculosis, the first laboratory in the United States dedicated to the study of tuberculosis.<ref name="Baldwin" /> He was later elected the first president of the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, the predecessor of the American Lung Association.<ref>{{cite web |title=The American Lung Association |url=https://postalmuseum.si.edu/exhibition/america%E2%80%99s-mailing-industry-industry-segments-nonprofit-organizations/the-american-lung |website=postalmuseum.si.edu |publisher=National Postal Museum |access-date=15 October 2024 |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=American Lung Association History |url=http://www.lung.org/about-us/our-history/ |website=lung.org |publisher=American Lung Association |access-date=15 October 2024}}</ref> He died in 1915 at age 67.<ref name="nytimes18150916">{{cite news|url=https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1915/11/16/119030641.pdf|title=Dr. E.L. Following Trudeau's death, the sanitarium's name was changed to the Trudeau Sanatorium, and a foundation and school were established to train physicians and healthcare professionals in the latest tuberculosis treatment methods. Trudeau Institute was traditionally reliant on research grants from the National Institutes of Health to fund research, but following declines in grants, the institution lost staff and received offers to relocate out of New York. Beginning in 2016, the institute was revitalized under the leadership of Atsuo Kuki, who reoriented projects from pure research to applied science, a strategy he labeled "Trudeau 3.0".<ref name="Rowland">{{cite news |last1=Rowland |first1=Tim |title=Adirondack researchers aid the fight against COVID-19 |url=https://www.adirondackexplorer.org/stories/trudeau-institute-3-0-builds-on-history |access-date=15 October 2024 |work=Adirondack Explorer |date=13 July 2020}}</ref> The institute hosted a summit on infectious disease in 2018.
