It is endemic to Brazil<ref name=IUCN/><ref name=RDB>{{NRDB species |genus=Tropidurus |species=insulanus|access-date=5 April 2022}}</ref> and is known from pockets of savanna within the Amazon rainforest of Pará and Mato Grosso states.<ref name=IUCN/>
Males grow to {{convert|86|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} and females to {{convert|75|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} in snout–vent length (SVL). The tail is 1.4–1.5 times SVL.<ref name="Avila-Pires 1995"/> It is oviparous.<ref name=RDB/>
