==History and profile== The magazine was first published in 1901<ref name=mpa>{{cite web|title=Defunct or Suspended Magazines, 2003|url=http://www.magazine.org/insights-resources/research-publications/trends-data/magazine-industry-facts-data/2003-defunct-or|work=The Association of Magazine Media|accessdate=13 December 2015}}</ref> as the ''Four-Track News'' by the New York Central Railroad. It was sold in 1906, and filed for bankruptcy in 1946. The title was purchased out of bankruptcy by Herman Shane.

''Travel'' merged with the competing magazine ''Holiday'' in 1977.

The Reader's Digest Association bought ''Travel Holiday'' from the Shane family in 1986. The company sold it to Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. in March 1996.<ref name=jonf/> Hachette Filipacchi closed the magazine in 2003 due to low advertising revenue.<ref name=mpa/><ref name=jonf>{{cite news|author1=Jon Fine|title=Hachette Closes 'Travel Holiday'|url=http://adage.com/article/media/hachette-closes-travel-holiday/37361/|accessdate=13 December 2015|work=AdAge|date=23 April 2003}}</ref> The last issue was published in June 2003.<ref name=jonf/>
