Stewardson was born at Kendal in August 1781, the son of John and Anne Stewardson, who were from a Quaker family at Ullsmoor, near Shap in Westmoreland.<ref name="DNB">{{cite DNB|wstitle=Stewardson, Thomas|volume=54}}</ref>
