McFall was born in 1913, educated at Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1938.<ref>Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975/76 p618: Oxford, OUP, 1975 {{ISBN|0-19-200008-X}}</ref> After a curacy at Cashel Cathedral he was the incumbent at Fiddown until his appointment as Dean.{{citation needed|date=February 2020}}
