In November 1904 he entered [[Macedonia (region)|Macedonia]] as a member of his fellow Cretan officer [[Georgios Tsontos]]. The same period, according to Greek sources, his band made a successful ambush against [[komitadji]]s and after that Koukoulakis and his men avoid an operation that was held by the [[Ottoman Gendarmerie]].<ref>Τσάμη Παύλου Λ., 1975, σ. 239 - 241.</ref> In March 1905, Koukoulakis took part in the attack against the [[Bulgaria]]n village of Zagoritsani ( today, [[Vasiliada]]).
