He was born into an ecclesiastical family on 24 April 1853<ref>His father was the Revd Prebendary H. B. W. Churton, sometime Vicar, Icklesham, Sussex and Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Chichester, a post his son was also to hold> “Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}</ref> and educated at New College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1883 and was Curate of Holy Trinity, Hastings<ref>”The Clergy List” London, Hamilton & Co 1889</ref> until his appointment to his father's old parish at Icklesham in 1891.
